New England Inn Adjacent to Bowdoin College

In autumn, the leaves on the trees shading the campus of Bowdoin College transition from green to shades of yellow, red, and orange. If possible, this makes the school look even more like a postcard version of a New England college than during the rest of the year. A very short walk from campus brings you to the Inn at Brunswick Station. It’s a comfortable and convenient spot for visitors to Brunswick, whether you’re visiting a student, catching the Bowdoin Polar Bears on the playing field, or taking in the fine collection at the Bowdoin College Museum of Art.

The school’s colors are incorporated in the guest rooms’ decor, but the warm palette in public spaces calls to mind the natural world outside. In the sitting room, you’ll find brown leather chairs and gold-toned pillows beside a roaring fire. Prints from the collection of the historical society hang on the walls, providing glimpses of life in the city over the years.

In addition to garnering TripAdvisor’s Excellence Award in 2012, the inn has had its praises sung by travel writer George Smith, who complimented the tavern’s crab cakes. Chef Kevin Cunningham uses the best of local ingredients from land and sea to create dishes such as sea scallops with lobster risotto and seafood scampi with shrimp, scallops, mussels, and hake in a garlic white sauce.

Brunswick, Maine: Historic New England Town

About 30 miles north of Portland you’ll find Brunswick, a quintessential New England town that gets its youthful flavor from Bowdoin College—1 of the top 10 liberal-arts colleges according to U.S. News & World Report. There’s no shortage of enriching activities on campus, whether it’s concerts in the music hall or exhibitions at the museums. Downtown, the brick sidewalk harks back to the olden days—the town was settled in 1628—and in winter, it looks a lot like a Currier and Ives print, complete with sleigh rides and an ice-skating rink. Specialty shops and fine restaurants make it a great place for shoppers and foodies alike.

The city holds claim to a number of literary heavyweights, including Nathaniel Hawthorne and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. It's also the place where Harriet Beecher Stowe penned Uncle Tom's Cabin. At the Pejepscot Museum & Research Center, you can learn more about the notable figures in Brunswick history via rotating exhibits.
