Early 20th-Century Craftsman Home near Downtown Bend
Lara House Lodge celebrated its 100th birthday in 2010, but this homey craftsman-style inn looks as young as ever. Featured in Seattle Magazine's 2010 Great Escapes series, the historical six-bedroom home features a contemporary interior accented with period showpieces such as the tiled fireplace in the living room. In keeping with the lodge's proximity to the Cascade Range, its design incorporates several all-natural touches such as a rock fence around the property, cherry-colored wood floors and ceiling beams, and a wealth of sunlight pouring through the many windows.
The inn's six guest rooms—split between three king rooms and three queen rooms—feature private bathrooms and cozy décor such as down comforters in earth tones. Some views look out on Drake Park, a lush swath of land hugging the banks of the Deschutes River.
The sunroom, filled with plush sofas and chairs, is a popular spot for enjoying a complimentary breakfast, which is prepared using local and organic produce whenever possible. In-house chefs brew local, organic coffee and set out multi-course breakfast. In the evenings, guests gather on the candlelit porch to sample Pacific Northwest wine and spot bearded musicians in their natural habitat.
Bend, Oregon: Trendy River Town Rich with Outdoor Recreation
Seattle Magazine describes Bend as a "town of seeming contradictions": despite its location in the Pacific Northwest, it gets an average of 300 sunny days a year. In recent years, the former sawmill town has transformed into a trendy spot for outdoor adventure. It's not hard to see why, given the nearness of both the Deschutes River and the Cascade Range. In 2009, Mountain Bike Action magazine named Bend the best town for mountain biking or mountain unicycling in America thanks to its network of more than 200 trails.
More than just an adventure outpost, Bend offers a stylish and cosmopolitan downtown district, too. The lodge is a five-minute walk from dinner and drinks, as well as music performances at the historical Tower Theatre. The city is also home to 10 microbreweries, many of which lie within walking distance of the lodge.
