Charming 1896 Victorian Bed and Breakfast in Picturesque Beach Resort Town

On a typical school morning at the Ocean City Mansion, innkeeper Nancy's multitasking skills are on full display. Between topping off coffees in the dining room and laying out newspapers for guests, she'll make sure her kids are squared away with lunch money and off to the bus on time. Guests at this three-story, Victorian-era mansion are treated with the kind of easygoing hospitality of an old friend’s house.

Ocean City Mansion’s lovingly crafted quirks set the place apart from other lodgings in the area. Each uniquely designed room overflows with books and puzzles illuminated by crystal chandeliers and crackling fireplaces. The breakfast room ushers in natural light, encouraging early risers to take their time eating house-made omelets, french toast, and fresh fruit, served each morning from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.

Ocean City Mansion's homey charm continues in its nonsuite rooms, which comfort visitors and confound roombas with king or queen beds, private bathrooms, and fireplaces. The Richard's Quarters room is colored in a crimson design scheme and dons a private balcony. In the Little Cabin room, couples can unwind after a long day by watching the ceiling-mounted TV above the queen bed or settling in to the two-person jacuzzi.

Ocean City, New Jersey: Pristine Beaches and Small-Town Charm

Driving down the broad, tree-lined streets of Ocean City, which are lined with the well-kempt lawns and patriotic bunting of a Norman Rockwell painting, it's easy to forget this is technically the Jersey Shore. Compared to the bright lights of Atlantic City, this coastal resort town comes across as quiet and laid-back, but its boardwalk, restaurants, and art galleries still provide plenty of leisure.

"It's really busy here from Memorial Day to Labor Day," says Stef Godfrey, the editor of Ocean City magazine. "But now the town takes a nice deep breath." In the winter, locals and visitors alike take up seasonal activities including cold-weather surfing, fishing, and crocheting wetsuits.
