Two-Story Log Cabin Lodge near Petting Zoo and Wildlife
Nine buffalo, three longhorn steers, and 60 white-tailed deer wander the 550 acres of forested hills and meadows that comprise the Pine Lakes Lodge property. It's not just wild animals that call this patch of eastern Ohio home; Leo, the resident-friendly bulldog, stays nearby in his own temperature-controlled house. The two-story, 11,000-square-foot Pine Lakes Lodge embraces its surroundings with exposed wooden beams, a large stone fireplace, and a chandelier made of antlers. At this nature lovers’ bed and breakfast, guests can interact with several animals and engage in outdoorsy pursuits that range from longbow hunting to bird watching.
Rustic cabin décor continues throughout the lodge's five luxury suites, each with a two-person jacuzzi and a balcony overlooking the sprawling grounds. In the 1,050-square-foot Southern Cross suite, a king-size poster bed rests beneath double-beamed cathedral ceilings. An en suite jacuzzi is large enough for couples or one longhorn steer masquerading as water buffalo. In the morning, innkeepers prepare complimentary country-style breakfasts, and complimentary snacks and drinks are available throughout the day.
After the sun sets over the lodge, the three-course dinner begins with broccoli-cheese soup or a homemade vegetable broth. Diners can select from a list of entrees that includes a new york strip steak, a portobello chicken breast, a stuffed pork chop, and a vegetarian Asian stir-fry. Dessert options including a mini cheesecake, a brownie fudge sundae, and a yogurt parfait seal the meal.
A slew of onsite recreational activities make Pine Lake Lodge a destination in and of itself. Lodgers can visit with the donkeys, miniature horses, and llamas in the property’s petting zoo or discuss petroleum futures with Carl and Jimmy—the lodge's resident pet camels. Several hiking trails crisscross the property near lakes stocked for fishing. Pine Lakes also offers one-hour guided horseback rides ($50/person) as well as mountain-bike ($25/hour) and two-seater John Deere Gator ($100/hour) rentals.
