Wine-Themed Bed and Breakfast in Tranquil Woodlands Setting
Innkeeper and independent wine consultant Julie Forville's passion for wine is at the very heart of Siloam Retreat, a four-room B&B located in Kitsap Peninsula, Puget Sound. She stocks the onsite wine shop with handcrafted artisan varietals from Napa Valley and Washington's Columbia Valley region, including award-winning Girly Girl wine. She also conducts private tastings, included with this Getaway, that lead guests through a tour of red and white samples.
The spirits theme comes through in the decor, too—vintage cocktail posters adorn the bedroom walls, a living-room table is propped up on old oak barrels, and a sign that reads "Wine Makes Everything Better" is prominently displayed above one of the tasting areas. To further a stay immersed in wine, you’ll receive a private-label bottle so you can enjoy more private tastings.
Siloam Retreat, whose name translates to "healing water," sets the stage for relaxation. Tucked away in the woods surrounded by towering trees, overgrown gardens, a pebble river, and a landscaped pond, it’s private, peaceful, and miles away from city life. The outdoor hot tub, stationed on the stone patio, is the coziest spot from which to enjoy the idyllic setting.
The ranch-style home offers four individually decorated guest rooms—the Bordeaux, Chablis, Rose, and Cabernet—that can be rented individually or as a whole for groups of up to 12. The rooms' quaint country furnishings and hardwood floors evoke the Pacific Northwest, and splashes of color like hot-pink walls and purple drapes add a cheeky flair. During your stay, you’ll have full use of the house, including a game room with a pool table, a living room stocked with board games and DVDs, and a fully equipped kitchen. In the morning, you'll find a basket full of assorted breakfast goodies that will hold you over until the afternoon.
Bremerton, Washington: Naval-Base City on Puget Sound with Thriving Arts District
The Kitsap Peninsula, located west of Seattle on Puget Sound, is surrounded by 236 miles of saltwater shoreline between the Olympic and Cascade Mountain ranges. Bremerton, the largest of Kitsap's many cities, sits on the southern end of the peninsula and offers some of the best views of the mountains and water. In 1891, the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard was established here on Point Turner, and the city has supported an active military culture ever since. You'll see plenty of navy ships anchored in the harbor about 12 miles from the B&B, and a tour aboard the USS Turner Joy—a Vietnam War destroyer—reveals an impressive array of weaponry. Highlights at the Puget Sound Navy Museum one block south include a collection of Japanese swords and authentic Russian uniforms.
There are plenty of ways to enjoy Bremerton’s beautiful scenery, ranging from dinner at a waterfront restaurant to a cruise on one of the many scenic ferries. A 2-mile trek to the summit of 1,700-foot Green Mountain, located 10 minutes from the B&B, yields some of the best views of Puget Sound and the Seattle skyline. For a more relaxing afternoon, head to Bremerton's downtown arts district, where galleries, jazz clubs, and a world-famous puppet museum converge near the water.
