Family-Friendly Destination Resort on Lakefront Peninsula
At the opening notes of a Christmas carol, the dark hills around the road suddenly shimmer: a jolly snowman and dozens of red and green trees all flash in synchronization with the music. Cars roll slowly along more than 1 mile of twinkling Ozark countryside to eyeball the surrounding spectacle, the time-honored holiday tradition of the annual Branson Area Festival of Lights. After a trip through the incandescent wonderland, contented carloads can retire to the comfy quarters at Still Waters Lakefront Resort, a family-centered haven positioned on Table Rock Lake.
Each private balcony off the resort's lakefront condominiums looks out to rolling green hillside and placid blue water, and each space's ample floor plans encompass one, two, or three bedrooms. Simple, modern furnishings comfortably support large groups: a full kitchen facilitates family recipes, and a washer/dryer cleanses clothes after loving food fights. A 25-inch television adorns each bedroom, as well as the living room, where watchers can warm themselves by the licking flames of a gas fireplace. After a long day, sojourners can dip into whirlpool tubs, which grace the bathrooms of the two- and three-bedroom configurations.
Although most water activities shutter up their business during the winter, it's possible to scope the peninsula's scenic terrain by taking advantage of free bike rentals. At night, groups can trek to the aforementioned Branson Area Festival of Lights, admission to which is included with this Getaway.
Branson, Missouri: Holiday Cheer Adds to Robust Entertainment Roster
Less than a mile up the peninsula from Still Waters lies Silver Dollar City, an 1880s-themed amusement park that hosts its annual Christmas show starting November 5 (admission not included in Getaway). Visitors can capture the holiday spirit without setting glue traps for Santa by enjoying the show's rides, live entertainment, and light shows. In the center of the square, a five-story, light-wrapped tree sparkles in a rapid succession of patterns and colors. Famous names such as Dolly Parton and Andy Williams flash on marquees and signs throughout Branson, which draws crowds for its grab bag of family-appropriate shows and kitschy museums.
Although Still Waters Lakefront Resort offers specials throughout the year, this Groupon is still the best deal available.
