Victorian Mansion Close to Downtown Theaters and Restaurants

Until it was converted to a hotel in 1914, the mansion that now houses the Stone Maiden Inn was the private residence of a prominent Stratford attorney. Today, signs of the inn's 19th-century origins can be spotted in its intricate plaster moldings and period furniture. The place also retains its cozy, residential vibe—in part because innkeepers Kim and Pat Walsh actually live here. They strive to make you feel at home, both in the 13 guest rooms and the welcoming parlor, where visitors can often be found reading, playing board games, and leafing through a hotel register dating back to 1932.

The inn's guest rooms are furnished with elegant décor and antique accents. Some rooms feature four-poster beds and elaborately carved woodwork. Others are equipped with french doors and old-fashioned bathrooms with claw-foot tubs and wig-powdering stations.

Stratford, Ontario: Small Town Home to World-Famous Shakespeare Festival

Though it's a relatively small town nearly 100 miles from Toronto, Stratford is a big deal in the international theater scene, thanks to the renowned Stratford Shakespeare Festival. Every year from April through November, theater-lovers flock to four separate performance venues to see productions of the Bard's comedies, histories, tragedies, romances, and long-form knock-knock jokes—as well as a full slate of other works including musicals, classic dramas, and experimental works.

The influx of out-of-towners has fueled the development of a strong restaurant scene built around the use of organic ingredients culled from local farms. Gourmet and casual dining options stand side-by-side in the quaint downtown area.
