Spacious Log Homes in Gore Mountain Range
When the first of the Foreman family’s mountain lodges burned down in 1998, the family rebuilt, redesigned, and expanded it using 250,000 pounds of handpicked douglas-fir logs. This time, the building was constructed with families and large groups in mind, as reflected in its six bedrooms, two living rooms, and spacious covered porch. Known as Summit Peaks Lodge South, this home became the first of four Summit Peaks and Riverside Lodges—all of which offer the same roominess and solitude in the Colorado mountain wilderness. A stretch of the Blue River passes through the backyard of some of the cabins, and others border the White River National Forest, home to herds of elk and bighorn sheep.
All four lodges lie within a mile of each other, and a complimentary shuttle makes stops at each of them before heading to nearby ski trails. During the winter, potbelly stoves, heated wood floors, and fireplaces help keep the chill out. Wraparound decks with large outdoor hot tubs invite relaxing soaks on warmer days. Inside, there are private bedrooms as well as rooms with multiple beds for large families and traveling circuses.
White River National Forest: Skiing Hub Near Picturesque Mountain Towns
From its position alongside the 2.3 million-acre White River National Forest, the town of Silverthorne serves as a gateway to many of North America's most renowned ski areas. Arapahoe Basin, Loveland, and Breckenridge all lie within a half-hour drive. As the season draws to a close around mid-April, melting snowdrifts feed area waterfalls, and the terrain opens to hikers and mountain bikers. One of the most popular trails loops around the massive Dillon Reservoir, past the cities of Dillon and Frisco.
Though each mountain town boasts its own restaurants, après-ski lounges, and yeti nightclub acts, Breckenridge stands out for its quaint main street lined with century-old brick façades. Here you’ll find shops stocked with mountaineering gear and saloons that once catered to gold miners.
