Upscale Boutique Hotel in the Heart of Downtown Columbia
The Tiger Hotel is situated in downtown Columbia, Missouri, just a quick walk from the University of Missouri. Naturally, that makes the boutique a good home base for visiting Mizzou’s campus. But its convenience isn’t the most interesting thing about it—attached to the hotel is The Velvet Cupcake, an artisanal cupcake shop. It has treats with unique flavors, such as maple-bacon cupcakes and pumpkin-roll cake pops. There’s also the onsite speakeasy-style restaurant, The Vault, whose small-plate menu has items like New England crab cakes and poutine alongside award-winning cocktails.
You can get a nice view of downtown Columbia from deluxe king rooms and junior suites. Each has tasteful modern furnishings and a color scheme of chocolate and gold. There are views of the Mizzou campus in junior suites. When you want to head out to eat, you’ll be just steps from more than 70 restaurants.
Columbia, Missouri: College Town with Famous Film Festival
Located in the center of Missouri, halfway between Kansas and Saint Louis, the city of Columbia has been nicknamed College Town USA. It’s home to the University of Missouri, which has more than 70,000 students, and the activities tend to favor the young crowd. On Saturdays in the fall and winter, the focus is on college football—the Missouri Tigers play in the powerhouse Southeastern Conference.
Downtown Columbia is the cultural heart of the city, with shops, bars, music venues, and plenty of restaurants lining the streets. Check out UM’s Museum of Art and Archeology, where you can see Roman coins, Egyptian mummy masks, and paintings from ancient times to the present day in the extensive permanent collection. In particular, the ongoing Missouri Art and Artists exhibit is worth a look—it has paintings from local artists past and present.
Each year, Columbia hosts the True/False Film Fest, which was named one of the top documentary-film festivals in the world by Indiewire. This year it takes place from February 28 to March 3. Head to Ragtag Cinema downtown to see some of the festival’s collection of independent and classic films.
