Historical Bed and Breakfast Overlooking Lake Kalamazoo

Twin Gables Inn has had many personalities: in the 1850s, it was a lumber mill, and it went rogue in the 1920s and was known for housing Al Capone's notorious gang. It's now cleaned up its act to become a charming country bed and breakfast: outside, its clean new image is evident in the gardens, which are meticulously landscaped and flanked by shade trees and a waterfall pond. A cross-generational family of innkeepers runs the joint, lending a homey, welcoming atmosphere.

Each morning, you can head to the lakeside sun porch to enjoy a three-course gourmet breakfast of fruit from local orchards and entrees, such as spicy enchilada eggs. In the spacious common room, there's homey furniture such as overstuffed chairs, oriental rugs, and a baby grand piano all warmed by a wood-burning fireplace.

Many of the guest rooms face the vine-covered gardens, and others overlook nearby Lake Kalamazoo. Each room is distinctively decorated and named after a type of wine, which nods to the many wineries and vineyards surrounding Saugatuck. A gas fireplace and a four-poster bed make up the Cabernet room, and the Vintner's Loft room comes furnished with a whirlpool tub and a sleigh-style bed.

Saugatuck, Michigan: Scenic Coastal Town with Thriving Artistic Community

The small coastal town of Saugatuck straddles Kalamazoo Lake, which feeds into Lake Michigan. In the town's charming main area, you'll stroll past bed and breakfasts, quirky gift stores and knickknack shops, and old-fashioned candy outlets. It's a peaceful, quiet place, and in spring and summer it can be relaxing to take a walk past the docks to watch as boats take off or as seagulls swoop onto children's heads to look for breadcrumbs.

In addition to the natural sights, art galleries and museums are abundant in Saugatuck and the neighboring village of Douglas, helping the area to earn its title as the "Art Coast of Michigan." The downtown art houses feature collections of local and national fine art.
