Cozy B & B Overlooking Columbia River
Looking at the butter-yellow Villa Columbia Bed and Breakfast from the front, you miss the cottage’s best feature: the sweeping, unobstructed views of the Columbia River from the back of the house. Built in 1911, the intimate B & B has only five guest rooms—and all of them look out onto the water. A heavy redwood front door swings open into the great room, which features polished wood floors hewn from local fir trees, a crackling fireplace, and large windows showcasing the piney scenery outside.
In each of the rooms, such as the main-floor Wind River room, new arrivals find a welcome basket stocked with chocolates, cheese and crackers, fresh fruit, and a bottle of local wine. A fireplace warms the cozy space. And in the private bathroom, an oversize antique tub facilitates muscle-soothing soaks or the creation of bubble-beard disguises.
In the morning, guests awake to a gourmet three-course breakfast served in the dining room or sunroom. Locally grown, organic ingredients are used to make bavarian-cream fruit tartlets, omelets, crêpes, and homemade pastries. From the porch overlooking the Columbia River Gorge, it's possible to catch a glimpse of woodpeckers hammering away at the trees surrounding the inn.
Hood River, Oregon: Windsurfing and Wineries in the Columbia River Gorge
The little town of Hood River, located less than an hour's drive from Portland, lies in the Columbia River Gorge, in the shadows of Mount Hood and Mount Adams. The strong, near-constant breezes in the area form perfect conditions for windsurfing and for testing hairspray strength. The former is one of the most popular outdoor activities in town. You can take lessons on the water or simply watch the action along the banks of the Columbia Gorge Sailpark.
The B & B is situated in the heart of Hood River, a short walk from the charming downtown district, which boasts eclectic boutiques, myriad eateries, and even a museum dedicated to classic cars and airplanes. There are also numerous wineries in the area. This Getaway includes a wine-tasting passport for two, entitling guests to samples at up to five separate wine-tasting locations.
