Hotel at a Glance: 18 Vine Inn & Carriage House
The Finger Lakes area has a long-and-proud tradition of grape growing and winemaking: as early as 1860, sommelier and U.S. Bonded No. 1 Winemaker Jules Mason became one of the country’s first people to begin producing their own champagne, working out of his estate and carriage house on 18 Vine Street in Hammondsport. Today, 18 Vine Inn & Carriage House carries on that tradition; the hotel is located in that same 18th-century house that Mason built.
- Optional tour package: With one of this Getaway’s options, you’ll embark on a five-hour tour that includes transportation, lunch, and tastings at five local wineries and breweries.
- Famous guest: Henry Ford is said to have frequented the property in the early 20th century.
- A complimentary breakfast of locally sourced fruit, granola, and pastries is served each morning.
- Stroll through the orchards and enjoy a picnic on one of the tucked-away picnic tables.
- Cozy up in front of the outdoor fireplace.
- Things to do: Walk to downtown, just a few blocks away, to grab a bite to eat or peruse the many boutiques.
- The Corning Museum of Glass in nearby Corning features collections of glass from around the world and classes on skills such as glassworking, flameworking, and sandblasting.
New York’s Finger Lakes: Rolling Vineyards, Deep Gorges, and More than 1,000 Waterfalls
The Finger Lakes region in Upstate New York gets its name from 11 long, thin lakes that were forged by glaciers thousands of years ago. The upheaval created breathtaking geography—more than 1,000 waterfalls spill down the sides of the area’s famous rocky gorges.
Take in more of the “gorges” scenery while enjoying the region’s outdoor activities. Fishing, boating, and hiking are its biggest draws—head to Watkins Glen State Park to follow a 2-mile trail past 19 waterfalls—along with more than 100 wineries. You can sample award-winning rieslings on wine trails that ring Canandaigua, Cayuga, Keuka, and Seneca Lakes.
Ithaca, which borders Cayuga Lake, is the region’s largest town. Come for the postcard-worthy views of Ithaca Falls, and stay for the small-town charm. Downtown Ithaca’s historical buildings house bistros, boutiques, and taverns that serve local wine from the Cayuga Lake Wine Trail. This is also where you’ll find Cornell University, one of New York’s two Ivy League schools.
