  • Day 1: Arrive in San Jose and settle in at your hotel —the Hotel Ambassador.
  • Day 2: The tour heads to La Catarata de La Paz, a rainforest waterfall, before the main attraction: the Poás Volcano and its massive crater. That night, you’ll settle into Hotel Lavas del Arenal.
  • Day 3: Zipline along the longest ziplining cable in La Fortuna, over waterfalls and through the dense jungles of Costa Rica on a canopy tour. You’ll also swim in La Fortuna Waterfall and get to know the indigenous Maleku people as they share their culture with you.
  • Day 4: Take on the rapids of the Balsa River on a whitewater rafting excursion. If there’s time afterward, you’ll tour a local farm.
  • Day 5: You’ll tour two volcanoes in one day. First, go for a swim in the green lagoon inside the Cerro Chato Volcano. Then, head to the Arenal Observatory to take in panoramic views of its eponymous conical volcano, Arenal Lake, and the jungle. Then it’s off to La Danta waterfall and the natural thermal hot springs, located in the middle of the forest.
  • Day 6–7: The tour heads south to Jacó, where you’ll spend two nights at the beachside Apartotel Flamboyant. After five days of adventures, you’ll have a chance to wind down your vacation along the Pacific coast and enjoy Jacó’s scenic coast and surfer culture.

Where You’ll Stay: Hotel Lavas del Arenal and Apartotel Flamboyant

You’ll spend the majority of your time in Hotel Lavas del Arenal and Apartotel Flamboyant. The former is tucked away in the jungle, just a few miles from Arenal Volcano National Park. On clear days, you can catch a glimpse of the peak from the outdoor swimming pool. Newly constructed rooms feature private bathrooms and free WiFi, plus microwaves, refrigerators, and coffeemakers. The hotel, which was named one of Costa Rica’s Top 25 Bargain Hotels by TripAdvisor, borders a small nature reserve filled with lush tropical foliage and native wildlife, including parrots and howler monkeys.

At Apartotel Flamboyant, you’ll stay in a room that’s steps from the beach. From the hotel, you’ll be a block or two from Jacó’s main drag, which is lined with restaurants and nightclubs.

La Fortuna, Costa Rica: Arenal Volcano, Soothing Hot Springs, and Exotic Birds

Until very recently, Arenal was Costa Rica’s most active volcano. It’s dormant now, but the surrounding region is no less stunning, with hiking trails, fertile rainforests, whitewater rapids for kayaking, and a lake that’s perfect for watersports. And many tourists still come to see the volcano, which punctuates the varied topography of Arenal Volcano National Park.

The park contains a diverse ecosystem near the center of Costa Rica. Birders come here from all over the world to glimpse some 850 species of feathery friends, including the rare and striking Resplendent Quetzal. The rich landscape is marked by waterfalls and a few rivers ideal for whitewater rafting, most notably Rio Toro. The park is also a prime spot to take a scenic hike through dense cloud forest by way of hanging bridges.

A more rugged trek awaits at Sendero Coladas, or Lava Flow Trail, which leads to a field of jagged volcanic rock that formed after the eruption decades ago. Due to its geothermal activity, the park is also home to a number of natural hot springs. These therapeutic springs are a nice spot to unwind after a hike or a sing-off with a howler monkey.
