Inn Housed in Old Schoolhouse Surrounded by Nature
John James Audubon’s meticulous documentation of birds helped cement his standing as one of America’s foremost naturalists. Adventures Unlimited’s Schoolhouse Inn has a room named after Audubon, and it’s fitting—the resort is tucked away from civilization, amid towering oaks and pines peppered with birds’ nests, near Blackwater River State Forest.
In addition to the Audubon quarters, the rest of the inn’s rooms bear the names of famous American authors and naturalists. It’s a tribute to the building’s past as a schoolhouse and its former pupils’ fondness for sleeping on top of books. The Ernest Hemingway room has one queen bed, a room with bunk beds, and a large porch with several rocking chairs—the perfect spot to read The Sun Also Rises. The charming Mark Twain room has a queen bed and a large porch that’s shared with three other rooms. All eight units feature hardwood floors, high ceilings, and antique furnishings.

Adventures Unlimited in Milton, Florida: Ziplining and Kayaking Through State-Protected Forest
Adventures Unlimited lies just past the official boundary of Blackwater River State Forest—an ideal spot for outdoor excursions. During the Ultimate Double Dip Zip zipline tour, you can soar through the trees at a height of 65 feet above Coldwater Creek’s sugar-white sandbars and the surrounding forest. Along the way, observation platforms provide spots for taking in the scenery. The trip culminates in a climb up a massive spiral staircase to the final launching pad, where you can see oxbow lakes and flawless cursive z’s made by the meandering creek.
As you zipline through the forest, you might catch a glimpse of kayaks and paddleboards on Coldwater Creek. Adventures Unlimited coordinates trips that take paddlers on 4-, 7-, or 11-mile treks down the river. Those with valid Florida fishing licenses can go angling for largemouth bass, catfish, and pickerel. To grab a meal or gather supplies between outdoor adventures, head to the town of Milton, located about a 25-minute drive south.
