This 12-day tour of China takes you on guided city tours of both Beijing and Shanghai, along with a cruise on the Yangtze River, which Frommer’s ranked among the world’s top 10 rivers for cruises. There’s also time to explore each destination at your own pace, or on an optional side tour (fees apply).

The tour kicks off with three days in China’s capital city, where you’ll have some leisure time before embarking on a full-day tour that begins on the pedestrian-friendly Qianmen Street and takes you to some famous landmarks, including:

  • Tiananmen Square: This storied public square is the largest of its kind on earth. It’s symbolic politically for a number of reasons—it’s infamous as the site of pivotal political upheavals, and it serves as the burial place of former chairman Mao Zedong. There’s a massive portrait painted in his likeness there.
  • Olympic sites: You’ll see Olympic National Stadium and the Water Cube, remnants of Beijing’s 2008 Olympics.
  • Accommodations: Double Tree Hilton Beijing
  • Optional tours: Hike along the Great Wall or visit the Forbidden City, which was once off-limits to non-royalty (additional fees).

Yangtze River Cruise

The tour heads south to Yichang to set out on a five-day cruise along the Yangtze River, with occasional stops that let you explore destinations off-shore.

  • Sandouping is the first port-of-call, and it’s home to the Three Gorges Dam, which can hold some five trillion gallons of water. The ship makes its way through the deepest of the gorges, Xiing Gorge.
  • Wushan: You’ll cruise west to see the Lesser Three Gorges. Wu Gorge is the most photogenic; legend has it that its mist-veiled peaks represent the spirits of fairy sisters.
  • Optional excursions: You can debark in Sandouping to tour the Three Gorges Dam, or, later in the trip, visit the nearby towns of Shibaozhai, Fengdu, or Wanzhou to see eerie statues of ghosts and a wooden pagoda that was built without nails.

This mega-city is the last stop. Here, ancient Chinese sites—such as the Old City—contrast with some modernistic riverside architecture, such as that seen along the Bund.

  • Shanghai Museum resembles a cooking pot on the outside; on the inside, you’ll find more than 100,000 artifacts, sculptures, and furnishings tracing back to the Ming and Qing dynasties.
  • City God Temple was first built during the Ming Dynasty and re-built less than a century ago; worshipers and tourists come here to tour it and browse at the on-site bazaar.
  • Bund: The Huangpu River acts as a scenic backdrop for this collection of contemporary skyscrapers and historical Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque architecture.
  • Optional tours: Take a cruise on the Huangpu River, watch a live Chinese acrobat performance, or venture to Suzhou, dubbed the “Venice of the Orient” for its scenic architecture and canals.
