Days 1–4: Overnight Flight and Bangkok

On day 2 you’ll arrive in Thailand’s capital—a whirlwind of gold-flecked temples, neon-lit nightclubs, and outdoor markets. For a change of pace, hire a long-tail boat to take you on a scenic float down the city’s winding canals.

  • Reclining Buddha: At Bangkok’s oldest temple, Wat Pho, you’ll find a Buddha statue stretching out more than 150 feet in length.
  • Orchids after midnight: Colorful blooms fill the air with a heady aroma at Pak Khlong Talat, a market that stays open all night.
  • Optional tours: night market visit with classical dance show and dinner ($40/person; day 3) or a landmark tour with a boat ride ($60/person; day 4)

Day 5: River Kwai

You’ll start the day by exploring the Damnoen Saduak Floating Market, then you’ll head to Kanchanaburi to visit the War Cemetery, where victims of Japanese imprisonment during World War II were buried. You’ll also see the famous bridge over the River Kwai, which was immortalized in the 1957 Hollywood epic. Feel free to walk along the bridge for a snapshot—just duck into one of the safety points if a train appears.

  • Death Railway Bridge: The more dramatic name for the bridge over the River Kwai reflects the fact that it was built by POWs during WWII.
  • Optional tour: elephant trekking and bamboo rafting with dinner ($50/person; day 5)

Days 6–8: Ayutthaya and Pattaya

Once the capital city of Siam, Ayutthaya boasts a breathtaking collection of ruins. Pattaya lies on the east coast of the Gulf of Thailand and is built around a crescent-shaped bay.

  • Wat Mahathat: Buddha’s head can be spied through thick tree vines at this temple in Ayutthaya.
  • Dark Ride Theme Park: Learn about rare gems during an exciting light show in Pattaya.
  • Optional tours: Ayutthaya dinner cruise ($40/person; day 6), Pattaya cabaret show and seafood dinner ($50/person; day 7), and Coral Island tour with lunch ($35/person; day 8)

Days 9 and 10: Bangkok and Departure

You’ll have day 9 to spend at your leisure in Pattaya before transferring to Bangkok. Depending on your assigned airline, you’ll either fly home in the morning on day 10 or have a full day in Bangkok before boarding a flight in the late evening.

  • Optional tour: three-hour dinner cruise in Bangkok ($50/person; day 9)
