Experience South Africa from Table Mountain to the Big Five

On this 10-day tour of South Africa, you’ll start by spending a few days in Cape Town under the shadow of Table Mountain. After getting your fill of city life (and South African wine), you’ll head out into the savannah for a 2-day safari—keep your eyes peeled for lions, elephants, and rhinos. Each option includes:

  • Round-trip airfare from New York (JFK) or Washington, DC (IAD) via direct flight from South African Airways
  • Domestic flight from Cape Town to Johannesburg
  • 4-night stay and daily breakfast at Pepper Club Hotel & Spa in Cape Town
  • 2-night stay with all meals and snacks at Ivory Tree Game Lodge at Pilanesberg National Park
  • Up to four game drives
  • Round-trip airport transfers in Cape Town and Johannesburg
  • Taxes and fuel surcharges

Day 1: Flight to South Africa

Days 2–5: Cape Town

After an overnight flight to Johannesburg, you’ll be transferred to Cape Town on day 2. Your home base will be the Pepper Club Hotel & Spa, a sleek and luxurious escape from the bustle of the city. You can recharge from a day of exploring with a dip in the outdoor pool or by booking a massage at the spa. Days 3–5 are yours to explore Cape Town on your own; here are some recommendations:

  • Table Mountain Cableway: Ride a cable car to the summit, which is covered with wildflowers and shiny silvertrees. Look down and you’ll see the city and distant Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela served out his prison sentence.
  • Boulders Beach: More than 2,000 penguins dwell amid these giant boulders; the best place to catch a glimpse of them is from the Foxy Beach boardwalk.
  • Winelands: Take an optional day trip to explore the wineries and vineyards that have been producing world-class wines since 1659.

Days 6–8: Ivory Tree Game Lodge

An included flight will take you to Johannesburg; from there, you’ll ride into the bush to reach Ivory Tree Game Lodge on the grounds of Pilanesberg National Park. The resort’s handsome guest rooms all have outdoor sitting areas where you can relax and listen to calling birds and the rustle of warthogs.

  • Game drives: Take up to four total drives through the park for a chance to catch sight of the Big Five—lions, elephants, buffalos, leopards, and rhinos.
  • Distance from Johannesburg: about 2 hours
  • Take it easy at the lodge’s pool or spa.

Days 9–10: Return Flight to the United States
