These were amazing facilities for the price. Both facilities supplied drinking water in the room. I would recommend bringing some snack type stuff in your bag. In Belize lunch is the big meal. Belize is the safest I have ever felt out of the states. The exchange is two to one, however you do not get panhandled or pressured during your stay even when venturing out from the resort, which we highly recommend. Almond Beach resort was awesome, our room was 20 steps from the water. If you read you know the bugs are bad, we used a sunscreen with bug spray and an unscented bug spray at night, my husband didn't get a single bite, I was eaten up by sand flies (we call them no see-ems). If you are prone to bites I would look into the vitamins you can take ahead of time. While in Hopkins you must try the local Garifuna food, we ate at the local places the entire stay and loved it and never got sick (It was lobster season!). Morning fry jacks are a local staple and reminded us of elephant ears without the powdered sugar. All local restaurants were in town, we walked to Innes the first day (It felt like a hike because of the humidity), we rented bikes the second, and a golf cart the third. We highly recommend Innes and for a romantic evening Chef Robs (four course meal on the water, make a reservation, for the price of a one course meal, chef quality, it was amazing) I wish we had snorkeled in the Belize barrier reef while there, but I was leery of the two hour small boat ride. The sleeping giant rainforest lodge was also amazing, however take snacks and prepare. We acquired some snacks from the grocery stores in Hopkins, the locals call it the Chinese, because they are all owned by Chinese. There is no where else close to eat in the rainforest, the restaurant is extremely overpriced and the food was below average. They do not offer snack options either. The drink prices doubled from Hopkins to the Sleeping giant. The market in Belmopan on your way back to the airport is a wonderful place to get local tacos, tostados, etc. if you just ask your driver to stop and account for the time. When arriving to Belize, we flew in to Belize city and took a puddle jumper to Dangriga. Then a $50 forty minute cab drive to Hopkins. If I had to do it all over again I would just take a car service from the Belize city to Hopkins, its two hours, and ends up being cheaper if you do your research. They do have highways until they get into the village so the drive is not bad. The shuttle from the beach to the rainforest was one hour and the rainforest is closer to the airport about an hour, so I suggest doing the beach first. If you leave close to check out or later you can do a shared shuttle for half the price, but if your flight is early, prepare to pay $150 to the airport for private transportation for two. We had an amazing time, and would highly recommend this trip to couples, kids may get bored.

Vacation at Belize’s Beaches, Jungles, or Both

With this Getaway, you can spend four or six nights at Almond Beach, a beachfront Belizean resort along the Caribbean Sea. Or, you can choose to split six nights between Almond Beach and a sister resort in the Belizean jungle, Sleeping Giant Rainforest Lodge. If you choose Option 5 or 10 for this Getaway, you’ll spend your first three nights in an ocean view room at Almond Beach and then transfer (transfers included) to Sleeping Giant Rainforest Lodge for three nights in a Spanish Casita room.

Almond Beach

Almond Beach hugs 700 feet of unspoiled beachfront along the eastern coast of Belize, where lounge chairs, hammocks, and casitas dot the soft white sands. You can also borrow a kayak from the resort and paddle out into Commerce Bight’s calm waters—the Belize Barrier Reef protects them from heavy surf.

Beachfront and ocean view rooms sit just 60–120 feet from the Caribbean, and you can admire partial or full ocean views from private patios. Both feature regional artwork and hand-carved furniture made from local mahogany, cabbage bark, or barba jalote.

Dine on fresh seafood, local fruits, and other Belizean specialties at the open-air restaurant Jaguar Reef, or stop by one of the resort’s beach barbecues. Wake up with a locally sourced brew at Butterflies Coffee Shop, which serves coffees grown in all seven Central American countries.

To see more of the area, you can book a tour. Options include snorkeling and diving trips to the Belize Barrier Reef and a visit to Mayan ruins in the interior of Belize.

Hopkins, Belize: Unspoiled Beaches and Garifuna Culture

A small fishing village along Belize’s Caribbean coastline, Hopkins is best known for its unspoiled white-sand beaches and Garifuna culture. Villagers celebrate their heritage—a mix of West African, Carib, and Arawak—with traditional music, dance, and drum performances. The festivities can be enjoyed by visitors throughout the year, but are most prevalent around Garifuna Settlement Day, held each November.

The village is a short boat ride from the Belize Barrier Reef, the world’s second largest reef system. Its coral atolls, coastal lagoons, and mangrove forests harbor manatees, sea turtles, and hundreds of species of fish, making it one of the Central America’s best spots to snorkel and dive.
