Hotel at a Glance: Annapolitan Bed and Breakfast
In the late 1800s, before the Chesapeake Bay Bridge was built to connect Maryland’s eastern and western shores, taking a ferry was the only way to get into Annapolis from certain directions. But it was expensive—especially if you needed to get into the city for work every day—and so a sprawling farmhouse about a mile from downtown was put to use housing workers during the week. Known as the Annapolitan Bed and Breakfast, the circa-1870 house still welcomes guests to this day. Period details include wood furnishings, brass chandeliers, a fireplace in the living room, and a wraparound porch.
- Unique room decor: None of the inn’s five rooms are decorated alike, but they do share details such as nautical-themed art and knickknacks.
- Three-course breakfast is served every morning; owner John Holt’s french toast is particularly popular with guests.
- Take a stroll through the inn’s landscaped grounds.
- Toast to your vacation with the bottle of wine included with your stay.
- Catch a game at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, a 20-minute walk away.
Annapolis, Maryland: Colonial City on Chesapeake Bay
You’d be hard-pressed to find a skyscraper in Maryland’s capital city. Instead, old-fashioned streetlights shine down on cobblestone thoroughfares lined with colonial storefronts and ornate mansions. There are more 18th-century buildings in Annapolis than in any other US city—one of those structures, the Maryland State House, is the country’s oldest state capitol still in use.
Downtown walking tours bring Annapolis history to life, as does the Banneker-Douglass Museum, where you can examine photos and documents relating to famed abolitionist Frederick Douglass and learn about early antislavery movements.
The city is also home to the United States Naval Academy. Visit the school’s museum to learn all about that institution, or join a campus tour to see its historic halls and chapels. Afterward, indulge in some famous Maryland crab cakes at the City Dock on Chesapeake Bay. Sightseeing cruises take to the water all throughout the spring and summer, but sailing is by far the city’s most popular maritime activity.
