Private Beach Resort on Island Accessible Only by Ferry
Isla Mujeres lies just 6 miles offshore from Cancun but feels an ocean away. The mood is much more relaxed on this less-than-2-square-mile strip of sand and palm, which is accessible only by ferry. The Avalon Reef Isla Mujeres occupies its own, tiny islet connected to the main island by a narrow bridge, giving the resort a secluded feeling, even by Isla Mujeres standards.
A row of Spanish-style studios line the beach just beyond the resort’s main tower. Spacious and simply furnished, the studios each have a kitchenette and a private balcony with sweeping views of the Caribbean. A sugar-sand beach encircles the resort and a natural tidal pool offers a shallow, warm place to splash around and snorkel. After a jog around the islet (try four laps for a mile), you can chow down on fresh fish and Mexican fare at either of the hotel’s restaurants. There’s also a beach bar with live music, as well as a swim-up pool bar where you can test the theory that frozen daiquiris cure sunburn.
Isla Mujeres, Mexico: Mayan Ruins and Lively Markets
Isla Mujeres, or Island of Women, is named for the female-shaped idols found scattered around the island by a 1517 Spanish expedition. The island is also famous for its temple to the Mayan fertility goddess Ixchel. The ancient ruins were partially damaged by a hurricane in 1988, but some of the temple and most of its foundation are still visible and remain a major tourist draw.
The island’s charming, four-block-by-six-block downtown is known as El Centro. The outdoor market, El Macado, is worth the trip to El Centro for its fresh flowers, exotic fruits, tacos, and vegetables. Cozy, open-air restaurants serve fresh Mexican fare and offer front-row views of the bustling, little downtown.
