Property at a Glance: Bear Claw Lodge

You can see Baldy Mountain rising in the distance from the expansive dining room windows of Bear Claw Lodge. Though it looks far away, the snow-capped peak is only 8 minutes away if you travel by helicopter—the lodge is popular for heli-skiing, in which a chopper drops you off to a remote backcountry ski spot. Bear Claw offers many other outdoor excursions throughout all the seasons, from horseback-riding and rafting in summer to steelhead fishing on the Kispiox River come fall.

  • All meals included: The hotel features dishes made with ingredients from an on-site organic garden and proteins sourced from local vendors. One of their specialty dishes is an 18-ounce, locally-raised, grass-fed beef steak, hand-cut at Smithers Sausage Factory.
  • Wake-Up Call: Included with this deal is the hotel’s morning coffee service, where guests will have their favorite beverage brought to their bedside table in the morning.
  • Handcrafted beds and other furnishings fill the lodge’s eight rooms with the fresh scent of cedar.
  • Wildlife galore: Bald eagles, black bears, and beavers traverse the rugged valley floor and snowy peaks surrounding the lodge.
  • Float through history on guided raft trips through ancient First Nation sites.
  • Artisan-carved totem poles decorate the 15,000 square-foot space, which has some careful post-and-beam craftsmanship.
  • Summer camp with an eco-twist: Groups of kids ages 10–16 can experience myriad outdoor adventures in week-long camps while parents relax.

Kispiox, British Columbia: Wild Steelhead and Totem Poles on the Kispiox River

In early fall, after the summer’s snow-melt has dissipated, the Kispiox River runs clear and fills with wild steelhead—the largest strain of wild steelhead in the world, in fact. The biggest of these behemoths can weigh north of 40 pounds, making for a fisherman’s (challenging) dream. Throughout the summer, anglers can also get their fill of chinook and coho salmon in the Skeena River tributary, set against the dramatic Hazelton Mountains. And where the Kispiox and Skeena Rivers meet, First Nation totem poles by Gitskan artisans rise up from the ground like sentinels to watch over the fertile riverlands.
