Tour of Costa Rica's Volcanic Rainforests and Coastal Parks

For more than 50 years, the government of Costa Rica has been dedicated to minimizing its ecological impact by rescuing sea turtles, reforesting, and preserving offshore coral reefs. Thanks to these efforts, Costa Rica has emerged as one of the world's ecotourism capitals. Its terrain is surprisingly diverse, considering it's about the size of West Virginia. An uphill hike can take you from the thick of the jungle, past pristine beaches, to a landscape that looks like it was airlifted from the Swiss Alps. Not surprisingly, a wide variety of wildlife makes its home here. Iguanas, giant anteaters, and sloths are among the more striking specimens.

With both eight-day and five-day tours, Beyond Boundaries Travel provides an up-close, hands-on experience of Costa Rica's biodiversity via tours and scheduled activities. Airfare is not included. Click here for detailed itineraries.

Days 1–4: For both trips, you'll arrive at Juan Santamaria International Airport in San Jose, the nation's capital, and pick up an included SUV rental for the journey to Los Lagos Hotel Spa & Resort. Located next door to Costa Rica's most active volcano, Arenal, the hotel makes a cozy home base for exploring the area and doles out relaxation at its natural hot springs and open-air spa. An observatory overlooks nearby rainforests and lakes formed by ancient lava flows. Intrepid travelers may want to hike the lofty trails around Arenal for a bird’s-eye view of daily eruptions.

During your stay you'll have opportunities to go ziplining, horseback riding, and whitewater rafting in the forest. Both tours also include visits to a frog farm, a crocodile farm, and a butterfly garden. Those on the five-day tour will spend all four nights at Los Lagos Hotel Spa & Resort before driving back to the airport the following morning. The eight-day tour moves along to Manuel Antonio National Park on the fourth day for the second half of the trip.

Days 5–8 Manuel Antonio National Park, on Costa Rica's Pacific coast, is comprised of white-sand beaches, mangrove swamps, and thick forests. A guided nature tour showcases the ancient turtle traps made by pre-Columbian peoples as well as local wildlife, such as rainbow-colored scarlet macaws. Other optional activities include ocean kayaking and sunset dinner cruises.

You'll spend four nights at Hotel La Mariposa, mentioned in Patricia Shultz's 1,000 Places to See before You Die which sits atop Manuel Antonio's highest point and offers more than 270-degree views of mountains and shoreline. The eighth day is set aside for driving back to the airport in San Jose to catch your return flight.
