See Norway’s Fjords and Cities

Norway’s stunning inlets, mountains, and fjords are reasons enough to visit this Scandanavian destination; it was called “one of the most beautiful countries on earth” by Lonely Planet. Feast your eyes on these and a wealth of cultural attractions on this vacation, which includes stops in Oslo and Bergen. You’ll choose between a 6-day trip and and an 8-day trip. Both itineraries give you time to explore on your own; below, we’ve included highlights in each city. This vacation includes:

  • Round-trip airfare from New York (JFK)
  • 2 or 3 nights of accommodations in Oslo at Comfort Hotel Xpress
  • 2 or 3 nights of accommodations in Bergen at Comfort Hotel Holberg
  • Round-trip rail tickets between Oslo and Bergen
  • Hotel taxes and service charges
  • Airline taxes and fees

Oslo

Sitting at the head of the Oslofjord, Norway’s capital is the only European city where you can go hiking, biking, sailing, and skiing within the city limits. Head to Oslo’s center to dive into Nordic history. At the Viking Ship Museum, you can see the intimidating hulls of ships built around 800 AD. The nearby Fram Museum teaches visitors about polar explorations through Nordic explorers’ eyes and features a famous polar ship.

  • The Vigeland Park is the world’s largest sculpture park made by a single artist. Here, you’ll see more than 200 of Gustav Vigeland’s works, including those in bronze, granite, and wrought iron.
  • Akershus Fortress was built in the 1290s; though it’s seen many battles, it has never been captured by a foreign enemy. It still serves some military offices, but the fortress and its military museums are open to the public.
  • See The Scream by Edvard Munch at the National Gallery; it’s also home to works by Paul Gauguin, El Greco, and Henri Matisse.
  • See how royalty lives at the Royal Palace. The Norwegian monarch lives here, but you can take a guided tour through many of the stately rooms.
  • Leave city life behind on a short subway ride to Oslo’s outskirts. Many trains will take you straight into forested areas.

Bergen

On the train ride between cities, you’ll enjoy views of the Hardanger Plateau and many of Norway’s fjords. These fjords and mountains create a beautiful backdrop for Bergen’s Bryggen district, a UNESCO World Heritage site built between the 14th and 16th centuries. Explore the timber buildings that line downtown’s Vågen Harbour—they’re mostly restaurants and local artisans’ shops. The rest of the city climbs Bergen’s famous seven hilltops. Get a bird’s-eye view by riding a cable car up a steep street, or take the Fløibanen funicular to the top of Mount Fløyen to see the entire city below.

  • Bergen Art Museum: See art by Munch, Joan Miró, and Pablo Picasso.
  • Visit Hardangerfjord, the world’s third-largest fjord, about 30 miles away. Here, you can take a boat cruise, go for a walk on the Folgefonna Glacier, or see the Vøringsfossen waterfall.
  • Trolls’ Hill, or Troldhaugen, is where composer Edvard Grieg built his summer villa. You can see the home’s paintings, antique furniture, and grand piano on a tour. If you’re lucky, you might also catch a show in the concert hall.
  • Dress like a local with a rain jacket and umbrella. Bergen is sometimes called “Regnbyen,” or rainy city, due to its typical 240 days of rain a year.
