Cape May Court House, New Jersey: Quiet Seat of Cape May County

Cape May Court House is the definition of a sleepy American community. This quiet spot of around 5,000 people is the county seat of Cape May County, and holds the distinction of being the home of the only hospital in the area. To keep the kids occupied, head to the always-free Cape May County Zoo, a collection of more than 550 animals set on 220 acres, including a 57-acre African savanna habitat.

If you’re looking for a quick day trip, drive 20 minutes to Cape May. Long billed as America’s oldest seaside resort, Cape May sits at New Jersey’s southernmost tip. The setting is so idyllic that Travel Channel named the town’s coastline 1 of the top 10 beaches in the country. Aside from beachcombing, popular pastimes here include fishing, whale watching, and bird watching. In fact, the New York Times called Cape May “one of North America’s hottest birding spots.” You might see bald eagles, herons, and woodcocks. In the spring, keep your eyes peeled for the latter’s intricate mating dance.
