Chicago's Magnificent Mile: Upscale Boutiques and Historic Architecture

On Chicago’s Magnificent Mile, landmark skyscrapers such as the John Hancock Center and the Wrigley Building tower over the city's liveliest retail corridor. In total, this stretch of high-end real estate houses some 460 stores, ranging from exclusive designers such as Armani and Chanel to beloved brands including Apple, American Girl, and Gap. Double-decker buses and horse-drawn carriages circle the Chicago Water Tower, a limestone icon that survived the Great Chicago Fire, and droves of shoppers navigate eight levels of boutiques and cafés at the nearby Water Tower Place.

Lake Shore Drive runs two blocks east of Michigan Avenue. Travel + Leisure calls this stretch “the greatest architecture road on earth” thanks to the superstar skyscrapers lined up along the lakefront. The adjoining Lakefront Trail draws runners and cyclists year-round. Just a mile and a half north, North Avenue Beach is a summer hotspot for volleyball, people-watching, and live music at beachfront bars. A short bus ride away, Museum Campus features the Shedd Aquarium, Adler Planetarium, and the Field Museum—three must-see cultural gems. You can get to the beach (and practically anywhere else in the city) using Chicago's extensive public transportation system.

Location, Location, Location This hotel was in the right spot for many of the attractions in Chicago. It has great amenities and everything you need for business or pleasure. Their breakfast bar isn’t free but worth the $17 per person. The room was nice and set up for business and pleasure. Why not 5 stars. The check in was average. Parking was self parking with a charge of $60 a day. We asked for assistance to get a tax and was told to go down the block to the big Marriott and they could hail us one. Getting the room cleaned was a challenge. We were out all day and came back to the room unmade. Dirty towels still on the floor. We had to call down at 8 PM to get towels. The next day we did get the room done but we had to ask for it to be cleaned before we left. Yes the bed was made, garbage was emptied and we had clean towels but the floors weren’t swept. Still I wouldn’t rule it out if coming back to Chicago.

Friendly staff, great location, BUT First I’ll start with the positive attributes. The staff was very friendly. The location was great; it was a block and a half from the Harry Potter which is why we chose the hotel. My daughter and I have been dying to see the new HP store! There were plenty of dining options nearby also. The room was spacious, especially for big city standards. The bathroom has very nice. They offered sleep kits which I thought was a nice touch. There was a $60/day parking fee that included in and out privileges, a little pricey but on par for Chicago. However now for the not so good. Definitely get a sleep kit! I would bring upgraded ear plugs. The noise of fire trucks, police, ambulances on the street below is constant at night. The pool looked big and inviting, however when we got here it was pretty small, needed updates and only went from 3-3.6’ deep. Our last night here, there was a party in the room next door that went on until after 3am. They also were trying to open the door that leads into our room. It was very annoying.

Location of hotel and rooms The hotel is in a great location. A couple short blocks to the middle of the Magnificent Mile and close to regular things like a CVS, Trader Joe's, and plenty of dining options. Rooms are large, a/c was great and shower was nice. It was clean and cleaned daily (although 1 bath towel was soiled badly). Pool and fitness were well maintained and front desk people were helpful (maps, razor). Big issue is the layout. Taking up half a block the 5 stories have weird twists to get to lounges, pool etc. NOTE: If you want quiet, get a room with a high, odd number. These face the inner courtyard rather than the noisy street and are closer to the elevators. Our room, 8408, was literally a one block walk down the hall and half way around the corner of the next block to walk from the elevator.
