Old Forge, New York: Snowmobiles and Water Slides in the Adirondacks

When winter rolls around, outdoorsy types from across the northeast flock to Old Forge, New York, a tiny hamlet tucked into the Adirondack Mountains. The big draw is the town’s excellent snowmobiling infrastructure, encompassing more than 500 miles of meticulously groomed trails. Another winter highlight: McCauley Mountain, a regional favorite with both downhill and cross-country skiing.

There’s plenty to do when the thermometer starts creeping upward, too. Old Forge is home to Enchanted Forest Water Safari, New York State’s largest water park. With 32 water rides and a history that dates back to the 1950s, it’s no wonder Enchanted Forest was named 1 of the top 25 US water parks in TripAdvisor’s 2015 Travelers’ Choice awards. Those in the mood for something a bit more natural (but no less wet) can go whitewater rafting along the scenic Black River. There are also picturesque hiking trails on Bald Mountain, which provide stunning high-up views of the area, especially in spring and autumn.
