Hotel at a Glance: Admiral Fell Inn

With its traditional pubs, cobblestone streets, and old buildings clustered along the waterfront, the Fell’s Point neighborhood in Baltimore looks almost unchanged since the 19th century. This is where you’ll find the red-brick Admiral Fell Inn, which dates back to the 1770s. Individually decorated guest rooms feature classic decor and cherry-wood accents, as well as flat-screen TVs and in-room WiFi.

  • Onsite restaurants: enjoy casual fare at 8 Ball Meatball or get a hand-crafted cocktail and a plate of Latin American cuisine at Points South Latin Kitchen
  • Extra perks: select options include self-guided historic walking tour of Fell’s Point, breakfast for two, a bottle of wine, and a $25 Harbor Magic gift card valid toward a future stay
  • Rooms with a view: Each room has a different view, whether of Fell’s Point Square, an inner courtyard, or tugboats chugging through the harbor.
  • Colorful history: Parts of the inn’s multi-building complex have served at various times as a ship’s chandlery, a theater, and a seamen’s YMCA.

Baltimore, Maryland: World-Class Museums and Historic Waterfront Neighborhoods

Baltimore’s Inner Harbor—a busy port that was redeveloped as a tourism district in the mid-20th century—has become one of the city’s best-known and most beloved landmarks. Water taxis ferry visitors from one historic, cultural, or family-friendly attraction to another. Sites along the routes include the star-shaped Fort McHenry (where US forces repelled the British during the War of 1812, inspiring Francis Scott Key to write “The Star-Spangled Banner”) and restaurants where you can sample the city’s famous crab cakes.

You’ll find several unique museums here, too, from the National Aquarium—which houses more than 16,000 sea creatures in realistic habitats—to the wonderfully oddball American Visionary Art Museum, one of the country’s leading institutions for outsider art. For a stunning view of the skyline, the Inner Harbor, and Chesapeake Bay, head up to the 27th floor of the Baltimore World Trade Center, where you can see the city from 360 degrees at the observation deck.

We stayed a week over the Thanksgiving holiday. Staff is the friendliest ever, like family. Efficient valet parking, fresh continental breakfast options including house made preserves and great coffee. Clean king size room with fabulous views overlooking downtown Fells Point. Period furnishings on the homey, comfortable side. Water taxi, shops, restaurants right outside. We'll be back!

Wish I had read the reviews My family stayed for one night (two rooms) at this hotel, and we will not be returning. The floor was sticky, the curtains were missing on one window and falling off the rod on the other window, there were stains on the lampshades, holes and missing paint on the walls, no filter holder in the coffee maker, and in the bathroom the floor tiles were cracked along with stains in the toilet, sink, and bathtub. We chose not to use the shower or bath. I also found out that I was charged a $9.95 "service fee" for each room above the cost of the room rate. We did not use the internet or receive any services during our brief stay. That last charge felt like salt in the wounds after a disappointing stay at this property.

Time to Hit the Reset Button We had a wedding in Maryland on Saturday, May 29th. Most of us stayed at the Canopy by Hilton, which is a brand new hotel that completely blows this one away. Not all of our guests wanted to spend that much money, so this hotel was our economy option. Don't let the fancy "Ascend Hotel Collection" brand fool you. It's Choice hotels, which is pretty much bottom of the barrel. So we had two of our guests staying at the AFI. That night, I assisted one of them with getting checked in as I had booked her room on my Amex and hadn't had a chance to list her as the guest through Amex Travel. The guy at the front desk was a real piece of work. After I checked her in, I was walking around the lobby admiring some of the colonial art, etc. The guy literally creeped up behind me and then told me the area of the lobby I was in was closed. It sort of felt like he thought I was looking to vandalize the place or steal some pictures off the wall or something. So I left that area and returned to the main lobby where my wife was and continued waiting for the other friend of ours that was staying there. He then says I need to wear a mask. Now that's fine except this is a good 30-40 minutes after I arrived (without a mask). So this clearly didn't have anything to do with wearing a mask. So my wife and I left to wait outside for the other guest we had staying there. Bottom line - if you're going to hire low quality people with a ghetto mentality to be the face of your hotel, then you're probably not going to be the owner/operator for very much longer. Based on the other reviews I've read regarding the need for substantial renovations, this place will most likely need to be sold to a new owner with a substantial PIP (property improvement plan), new management, and a new flag (brand of hotel) in order to be viable again. Until that happens, I'd steer clear of this one. It has a lot of potential with its location and historic setting. Someone will buy it and hopefully turn it around.

This inn must be renovated soon; it will cost a lot, but the location is great. We just stayed 2 nights at the Admiral Fell Inn and the physical condition of the room, but especially the bathroom was sad. The bed(s) were very good to sleep on/comfortable and the floor was clean and wall art was fine and seating in the room was good, but most furniture and lamps have seen better days. The bathroom was like a 3rd rate hotel. Probably needs to be gutted and totally redone. You would be unable to make the tub for a bath to be functional. The shower did work, but the water temperature was always changing. What is extra nice is the lobby area with couches and other comfortable seating to spend time in. The people who man the front desk, both day and evening are super friendly and helpful and could not have been nicer. Unfortunately it is going to take a great deal of money to renovate this hotel, but the location is really great..close to good restaurants and right next to the inner harbor and very walkable. At night it is noisy with the night-life right outside the door. That is fun if you are out enjoying it all, but difficult when you want to go to sleep later. Parking is difficult for older people...there is a pay garage 2-3 blocks away and all street parking from early afternoon through the night is very, very difficult to find a spot. I would not stay there again unless the money is spent on renovating the place.
