Honolulu, HI: Where History Meets Island Majesty

Honolulu, the vibrant capital of Hawaii, stands as a testament to the islands' rich cultural heritage and pivotal role in Pacific history. Once the seat of Hawaiian royalty, this coastal metropolis blends the grandeur of ancient Polynesian traditions with the dynamic pulse of a modern urban center. The iconic Iolani Palace, the only royal palace on U.S. soil, echoes the kingdom’s regal past, while the historic district of downtown Honolulu reveals the layered narratives of missionaries, merchants, and monarchs who shaped the city’s destiny. Beyond its historical landmarks, Honolulu remains a strategic crossroads of the Pacific, its deep harbor and storied naval presence marking it as a global hub of commerce and defense.

Honolulu's natural beauty is as legendary as its history. Diamond Head, the towering volcanic crater, guards the city’s southern shores, offering breathtaking panoramic views from its summit. Waikiki Beach, once the exclusive retreat of Hawaiian royalty, now welcomes visitors from around the world to its golden sands and rolling surf. Yet, beyond the glitz of Waikiki, the island’s spirit thrives in the verdant valleys of Manoa, the sacred waters of Hanauma Bay, and the solemn grounds of Pearl Harbor. Here, the past and present converge, reminding all who visit that Honolulu is not just a paradise—it is a place of resilience, cultural richness, and enduring Aloha.

Decent Option Amongst Very Few Choices at the Airport. This hotel was fine. Shuttle from the airport was timely and free. The staff were friendly, helpful, polite and generally efficient. The rooms are outdated, as many have mentioned here, but it is a large airport hotel in which I doubt most people spend more than one or two nights. I didn't have any problem with the decor or room comfort. Yes, the hotel is pricey, like all accommodation in Honolulu, and they do ad an amenity fee for...what exactly? Breakfast was filling and tasty, and pricey. Overall it was an OK experience given the very few options that we had at the time.

Misrepresenting Property with excessive and unjustified fees Misrepresented Property with Excessive and Unjustified Fees I chose the Airport Honolulu Hotel because it is part of the Wyndham Trademark Collection, expecting a basic standard of quality. Unfortunately, the property was grossly misrepresented online. After a 7-hour flight and late arrival, I stayed approximately six hours and was charged $251.44. The hotel was dirty and poorly maintained, and the bed was a platform bed with an old, uneven mattress that made rest extremely uncomfortable. In addition to the room charge, I was assessed a $44 parking fee and a $25 “amenity fee”, which amounted to two bottles of water. These fees were excessive, poorly disclosed, and entirely disproportionate to the quality of the property. When I questioned the parking fee, I was told I should have returned my rental car and used the hotel shuttle instead—an unrealistic suggestion given the late hour and travel fatigue. This experience does not reflect Wyndham brand standards, and I would not have booked had the hotel been accurately represented.

PCS stay The stay at this hotel was pretty good up until the last day. Was very convenient for our situation and close to the airport. Complimentary breakfast was great. Dinner was pretty good as well. Staff was friendly and rooms were spacious and clean for price. First problem I experienced was the fact that there is a homeless camp across the street and sometimes they came to search through trash cans outside and loiter outside asking residents for money. Definitely and safety hazard so security should be on ground. Secondly, on the day of checkout the hotel charged me a total of $523 because they said the smoke detector in our room detected tobacco use. Keep in mind I don’t not smoke anything of any kind. No vape no nothing. I wasn’t notified of the charge until I seen it on my bank statement. Bad timing with Christmas being the next day and me and my family were traveling that same day. Last but not least, we asked the front desk if they could call a shuttle to the airport since we had a lot of bags. They called 2 separate uber pickups, and 1 of them went to the military base instead of the hotel (not sure why). We were forced to come out of pocket again for a taxi. Again, up until the last night our stay was going pretty well. But I wouldn’t stay here again simply because I would have a fear of unauthorized charges occurring.
