Hawley, Minnesota: Small Riverside Town near Fargo
Hawley is a close-knit town on the banks of the Buffalo River, just across the border from Fargo, North Dakota. On a hike through Buffalo River State Park, you can spot colorfully plumed prairie chickens parading through meadows of wildflowers. The Detroit Lakes Region, just southeast of Hawley, is a popular place for boating and fishing in spring and summer and for ice-fishing and cross-country skiing in winter.
Drive about a half hour west and you’ll reach Fargo, the rustic North Dakota city made famous by the Coen Brothers’ 1996 film, Fargo. Though it’s the biggest city in North Dakota, Fargo feels kind of like a small town. Its downtown is dotted with 19th-century buildings occupied by antiques dealers, bookstores, and a candy shop that’s been around since 1885. Visit the Fargo Air Museum to see midcentury planes and helicopters, along with a replica of the Wright Brothers’ first glider. Kids can don a pilot’s hat and sit in the cockpit of an aircraft, and grownups can fly virtually in a Frasca flight simulator.
