Laughlin, Nevada: Sunny Gaming Destination near the Hoover Dam

Laughlin is about 100 miles south of Las Vegas, but it's a gaming destination in its own right. At the city's nine casinos, there are plenty of slots and poker tables, and bingo is big here. You can find regular bingo games at the Riverside and the River Palms.

Laughlin averages 300 sunny days a year—a fine climate for exploring natural and manmade wonders. To get in touch with nature, hit up Big Bend State Recreation Area to go hiking along the Colorado River. For a manmade spectacle, head about 80 miles north to Boulder City to see the famous Hoover Dam, which sends thousands of gallons of water tumbling 70 stories into Black Canyon every day. Though its sheer size is captivating, you'll also appreciate the dam’s surprisingly elegant art-deco design.

Aquarius What a HUGE disappointment. Aquarius What a HUGE disappointment. My wife and I stayed four nights, Sunday through Wednesday, for Spring Break at the Aquarius and it was an awful experience from the very start. (We had reservations for 5 nights but checked out a day early and stayed at the Rio De Sol Inn n Needles – which was a thousand times better!) We had a river view room on the 5th floor. The bathroom towels were stiff and crusty, dust sprinkled down when you touched the lamp shade on the side of the bed and the power cord going down to the wall had dust strings half an inch long. The ottoman for the big chair had either BBQ sauce in the middle of it or blood from someone sitting on it? Disgusting! The tightest slots in Laughlin? When we walked through the casino, never once heard the bells going off from someone winning or anyone yelling with excitement. The names displayed in the hallway entrance listed past winners, however they dated back to November and December, the most recent we could find was January? And the amounts were $8000 to $11000. The Restaurants are NOT what they advertise on their website – TOTALLY misleading. On our first morning we went to breakfast at Cafe Aquarius and had to wait over 30 minutes to be seated. Then it took another half hour for the waitress to take our order and roughly 20 minutes later for our food to arrive. The ENTIRE staff were rude and seemed putout that they had to work. The meals were average price, but they made up for it by charging $5 for each cup of coffee! The Duet Coffee shop was a joke, nothing like Starbucks, coffee in our room was better! Subway was the only restaurant that was open 24 hours! Our reservations were made 6 months in advance to get the “discounted” rate of $50 a night. When we checked in, come to find out there was a mandatory $25 facility fee added for each night, so with taxes and fee our $50 room ended up being closer to $90 a night. The place is so run down that they can’t even afford to fix their own name and logo on the outside of the California Tower?! At night the pot of gold is not lite up on either side? Just below their name you can clearly see whitewash painting over “Hilton”, the previous owners back in 2006? The 43” LCD TVs don’t have the correct channels listed – what the heck? The Big Bang Theory was Gunsmoke? The Family Guy was Rick and Morty? To rent outdated movies cost $15 and current movies $25 or more? Laughlin is in decline, just google it! “the overall trend is one of decreased tourism compared to its peak in the late 1990s”. “Laughlin has seen a significant drop in annual visitor volume, with some reports indicating a 60% decrease from its peak” So, if you want to be treated like dirt, enjoy staying in a trashy casino with no pay slots and want to get nickeled and dime for everything possible, then the Aquarius is your best bet!

River view room This was our first time to stay at this casino hotel in Laughlin, and one of the reasons that I chose it was the option to get a $20 meal credit daily. We used that to purchase breakfast both days in the Cafe Aquarius and liked the prices and variety. Our room overlooked the hotel pool and the river from the 11th floor. One thing about the room that we didn’t care for was the window curtains didn’t meet up properly causing some light to filter into the room in the mornings.

Overcharged me $400 The worst casino in Laughlin hands-down Not only does this hotel overcharge for everything but they are dirty, rude and just terrible hands down. I will never stay here again. Worst mistake of my life. Every time I talk to people I tell them don’t stay at the Aquarius it is the worst casino in Laughlin.
