Boston's Back Bay: Victorian Architecture and Historical Landmarks on the Charles River

Boston’s Back Bay used to be just that—a literal bay that extended into the Charles River. In the mid-1800s, developers added landfill and created the grid-style neighborhood that remains today. Victorian brownstones and kempt gardens line the wide avenues of this waterside enclave that lies just west of Beacon Hill. Boston is a highly walkable city with a good public transportation system to boot, so you’ll be able to get to several other neighborhoods as well, including the Boston Common, which is the starting point for the famed Freedom Trail.

Often called the Rodeo Drive of the East, Newbury Street stretches eight blocks east from Massachusetts Avenue to Arlington Street. The quaint tree-lined street is home to dozens of high-end retailers such as Chanel and Cartier, as well as vintage boutiques and consignment shops. Between Newbury and the Charles lies some of the most desirable real estate in Boston; the historic brownstones are worth checking out. The Esplanade, a 3-mile jogging path along the Charles, is especially popular in the summer.

Alberto is the best! We had an incredible stay at The Arcadian Hotel in Brookline! From the moment we arrived, the staff made us feel genuinely welcome—kind, helpful, and always friendly. A special shoutout to Alberto, the manager, who went above and beyond and quickly felt more like a friend than hotel staff. The level of hospitality here is unmatched, and the entire experience was unforgettable. We immensely enjoyed our time at The Arcadian and absolutely plan to stay again. Highly recommend!

Can’t wait to come back Great place to stay. Friendly staff. Comfortable rooms. Great location across the street from a trolley stop. So super easy in and out of Boston. Within a half hour for all you want to see … makes for easy traveling in the city. I’d stay here again!

Stay away. Do not recommend. As visitors to Brooklyn from Australia, staying at this hotel was a huge let down. The interiors of the hotel is set up like a cruise liner with most of the rooms having no windows. The entire building is like a maze, making finding your room difficult. We paid extra for a one bedroom suite that was meant to have a view and we looked over the backyards of local houses. The water for shower was only just warm. There was a kettle, but no cups. We found one plastic cup in bathroom. We stayed 2 nights and there was no housekeeping. Staff were not at all approachable.
