Beyond the Las Vegas Strip: Old Vegas and Red Rock Canyon

It can feel like the entire city of Las Vegas revolves around the Strip if you never venture beyond that neon-lit corridor. But there’s plenty to see and do once you step off Las Vegas Boulevard. You can find a taste of Old Vegas on Fremont Street, where vintage signs and showgirls crowned with headdresses recall the days of Sinatra and Martin. Beginning at dusk, a canopy of more than 12 million LED lights erupts in a psychedelic light-and-music show every hour. For an aerial view, zoom down the center of Fremont Street on a zipline.

Nature puts on its own show at Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, a landscape of fiery-red sandstone formations and limestone cliffs just 17 miles outside the city. Motor down the 13-mile scenic drive or ditch the car and strike out on any of more than 20 hiking trails that course through the region’s otherworldly topography.

Good story to tell - Bad experience 1st night was ok, besides the miserable employees that checked us in. 2nd night we weren't able to get into our room due to the door lock malfunctioning, took them 2 hrs to fix the issue, when we were finally able to get back into our room not even 2 hrs later the emergency alarm goes off telling everyone to evacuate the building. When I exit my room the hallway has water rushing towards me and my kids, everyone is running in a panic towards the stairs. Everybody made it downstairs safe. The employees are not saying to us about the situation. I go to the front desk and tell them what happened and all they say is oh ya here's another key for your new room and that's it.. 2 hours later it's 1am now we are able to go get our belongings from the other room. We stayed on the 5th floor as soon as we got off the elevator the smell of sewer was unbearable. We were walking in sewer water all the way to our room. When I open our room door the bathroom is flooded the entire room is flooded with sewer water.. Ruined my shoes my laptops my important belongings.. the next morning at checkout as I was leaving my room. There was tons of police in front of my door with CSI it was a whole crime scene apparently there was a murder in the room across from me so I had to get out of my room again until the crime scene was over.

Arizona Charlie’s going downhill with customer service I just find this place has really gone downhill the free offers get worse and worse. They’re slot. Machines are really tight and the place stinks of cigarette smoke. I have been a loyal customer for years and I feel like I’ve been treated like a secondhand citizen.
