Phoenix, Arizona: Bustling Metropolis and Native American Culture Surrounded by Desert

Though the topography of the Phoenix area is all desert, it is by no means desolate. Camelback Mountain is a city park area with scenic trails that wind past boulders and red-sandstone formations; climb to the very top for a view of the entire city. Or hit the themed trails at the Desert Botanical Garden filled with Southwestern flora such as huge Sonoran cacti and other moisture-hoarding succulents. Either way, plan hikes in the early morning or twilight hours to catch the most stunning sunlit views and stay cool.

For an in-depth look at the cultures of Arizona’s indigenous population, browse the 12 exhibition galleries and sculpture garden at the Heard Museum. The collection’s nearly 40,000 pieces of art range from 500 Hopi katsina dolls to a full-size Pueblo oven. In nearby Scottsdale, Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin West was the renowned prairie-style architect’s winter home as well as a campus for his architecture school.

Great resort but don't count on the sofabed! This is a very big resort and conference center with multiple pools, a large water park area and a couple nice restaurants. My friends and I (3 of us total) were specifically looking for three beds so we could each have our own. To date, most of our experiences with updated hotels have been acceptable to nice sofa beds--especially when they advertise the sofa bed and include it in the total guests allowed. This was definitely NOT an acceptable sofa bed. It was old and had a very thin mattress. Every single wire could be felt. We asked for a mattress topper and housekeeping brought a 3 inch memory foam topper. It needed to be doubled over to do the job. I was able to sleep on it but I pity anyone expecting to sleep two adults on that sofa bed. We enjoyed the pools, the water park, the staff, and the restaurants and had a good experience otherwise.

Not as fancy as you'd expect with notable flaws The public spaces are lovely but you may spend a lot of time walking outside. The suites don't impress, the main restaurant is meh, you can't walk anywhere, the service has problems. • Walking: The resort is hugely spread out. If you're at a conference, you'll either walk down pavement in 100 degree temperatures or wait around to grab a golf cart shuttle. • Rooms: look and feel old, and not in a quaint way. No microwave. Tiny bathroom, sink in the bedroom, TVs hidden in corners. Mini bar munchies are surprisingly cheap, though. • Conferencing: At my conference, meals were served outside with seating outside too. Yikes. • Neighborhood: Who knows? It's too far to walk nearby in the heat. Maybe the nice golf cart guys will give you a ride toward edge of property. • Service: I had two separate reservations that were combined. No one told me that I had to return at some point to get new key cards... It's difficult to find ice machines since there's barely any signage... it's hard to figure out where elevators are... the clerk didn't tell me about the golf cart shuttles... in Camelback, the room hallways are outside... the housekeeper knocked loudly at my door and tried to come in at 9 am on checkout day (11 am checkout) despite my do-not-disturb magnet. She got a nice view of me in my towel after coming out of the shower... Restaurant: Poor service during busy lunch period. Food is OK. No food available after 10 pm, even on a Friday. Wi-fi: Mercifully, it was fine. But you'll need a password to use it in room, conference areas.

Arizona Grand Resort Stay for Two We stayed for 3 nights and were very pleased. They have an extensive campus with fun things to do all over it. They also have a free, spontaneous pick-up service, so I didn't have to walk to the gym, restaurant, or bar in the lobby. The water park is gigantic, and only an easy walk from most rooms. We enjoyed the lazy river, the wave pool, and the bar. I like that the room prices are in levels, so that if I don't need a whole suite, I can choose a smaller spot. I especially love that they put small swimming pools near our room. We could start the day with a swim or end the day after a full day of exploring Phoenix. We don't play golf, but we could have. I hiked a little of the desert trail and saw new birds that I don't have at home. The only negative thing may be the size of the bathroom. In our small room, we weren't able to both shower / use the toilet at the same time. Oh, and if other Guests come back singing late at night, you will hear them as they pass your room. Overall, I would stay here again, and if it's a special occasion, I would spring for the more expensive room.
