Phoenix, AZ: The Eternal Valley of the Sun

Set in the heart of the Sonoran Desert, Phoenix stands as a bold testament to American resilience and ingenuity, a city born from arid land and transformed into one of the nation’s most dynamic metropolitan areas. With over 300 days of sunshine each year, Phoenix has rightfully earned its title as the Valley of the Sun. Yet its story runs deeper than climate—this is a city steeped in Native American heritage, shaped by the Hohokam people who carved canals through desert soil long before modern settlers arrived. Today, that legacy endures in every adobe structure, every preserved petroglyph trail, and in the vibrant celebration of art and culture that pays homage to its indigenous roots.

Modern-day Phoenix merges cosmopolitan energy with a frontier spirit. The downtown skyline rises against a backdrop of jagged mountains and saguaro-dotted landscapes, while just beyond the city’s edge lie pristine wilderness preserves like South Mountain Park and the McDowell Sonoran Preserve. Visitors can trace Arizona’s early statehood through preserved architecture and institutions like the Arizona Capitol Museum, or lose themselves in the intricate narratives of the Heard Museum’s Native art collections. Whether you're exploring historic neighborhoods, indulging in world-class Southwestern cuisine, or catching the golden glow of a desert sunset, Phoenix offers a richly woven tapestry of past and present—where heritage is not merely remembered, but proudly lived.

Disappointed We recently returned to the Arizona Grand Resort, a place that’s special to us because we got married here, but this visit was very disappointing. The pull-out sofa bed was extremely uncomfortable, and several areas around the resort felt neglected. We even noticed dirty band-aids at the pool, which raised concerns about cleanliness, especially for families. Food and drinks felt significantly overpriced for the quality and service we received, and an email I sent before our stay—expressing how excited we were to return—went unanswered. The resort still has charm and a lot of potential, but the overall experience has declined, and sadly it didn’t live up to our expectations or the price.

Average I stayed 4 nights. The double queen room and suite was just as pictured on the website. I agree with previous reviews that the bathroom is just plain bad and poorly designed. There is barely room to clear the door to open or close without it touching the toilet. The shower curtain was well worn, tub has rust stains, excessive water scale staining in shower head. Tile grout and wallpaper very tired and tattered looking. The room looked fresh and was fairly clean. There was a need for detail in the dusting. Clock and lamps dusty. Beds were super comfortable, and the sheets were soft and there was a good selection of pillows. Also the towels furnished were thick and nice. Nice bath products also. However, the ones in the holders in the shower were very hard to use. Biggest complaint was that housekeeping only cleaned my room once during the 4 night stay. They describe a light cleaning each day including fresh towels, and removing trash and dirty towels at the minimum. My trash was overflowing and 2 of the four days I had to track down, and call for fresh linens. Even after I requested my room to be cleaned and purposely stayed out of the room all day, they didn't show. Most staff I encountered were e extremely friendly and helpful throughout the rest of the property. They were all very helpful with directions and explanations. I ate at 4 of the restaurants offered. They were overpriced and the food was average and as expected. The front desk staff during the day were exceptional. As well as the staff at the day spa. I had a facial and a massage. Both of my treatments were wonderful. Renee, my masseuse, was fabulous at listening and accommodating my needs and concerns. I highly recommend her to anyone needing a massage. My facial was very good also but I can't remember the ladies name. The spa was well appointed for the most part but extremely overpriced for the amount of amenities offered. Only 1 steamroom and a hot tub. Both were very warn looking. For some ridiculous reason they were blasting rock music in these areas. Very unrelaxing. The lockers and dressing areas were nice but there were nothing offered to help one get ready other than cotton balls and blow dryers. No hair combs or brushes, q tips, etc. The lady that worked the front desk was also very gracious and professional. She was working very hard taking care of coming and going guests, the phones, tours of spa area, refreshing the relaxation room. It was a good visit in general.

Disappointing Experience and Overall a Poor Value Booked 2 rooms as part of my daughter's wedding block. We needed one accessible room for my in-laws, as one uses a walker and the other is in a wheelchair. They need 24/7 care, so we needed an adjoining room to theirs. It's an extra $75/night to guarantee an adjoining room. The accessible room was so far from the elevator that we needed to get another wheelchair for my 86 year old mother-in-law because she couldn't walk the full distance from the elevator to the room. All of the people who booked a room in the wedding block was placed in a different building and the buildings are so far apart, you need a car or golf cart to go between them. How does this make sense? We had family and friends in from out of town and having the rooms spread out across the entire resort made it impossible to spend time together. The rooms were OK, but definitely not on par with other hotels in the same price range. The floors in the non-carpeted areas were a little dusty, the mattresses were very soft/worn out, no hair dryers in the rooms, and you had to call the front desk to get a luggage cart, as none were available in the lobby (we were in the Sedona building). For $250+/night (and that was a steeply discounted rate), I expected more Each room had a few bottles of water and some snacks. The water was $6 per bottle. I didn't bother to look at the prices of the snacks after seeing a bottle of water marked up 50x. If you want late checkout, it's an extra $30 for the first hour and $10 an hour after that. Between the prices for the snacks and water, plus the adjoining room fee and extra fees for late checkout, it just felt like we were being nickeled and dimed the entire time. On the day we checked out we went to the lobby restaurant for lunch. It was an abysmal experience. We dropped off my son and in-laws to get a table, then we parked the car and joined them. The in-laws had ordered coffee and had it when we got to the table. It took 10-15 mins for the server to come check on us and take our food and drink orders for lunch. We ordered donuts, salsa and guacamole, a burger and 2 Pepsi's. The restaurant was maybe 20% to 30% occupied and there were at least 3 servers and 3 food runners. After ordering, we waited at least 20-30 mins and still didn't have the sodas. The food finally shows up, brought to us by another server (not the one who took our order) but still no sodas and no setups (silverware). I asked that server for the manager and she showed up a few minutes later. We still had not seen our original server and still had no sodas or silverware. We explained to her the issues, for which she apologized, told us the meal would be comped and then quickly got us sodas and silverware. After about 10 more minutes, our original server shows up and asks how everything is. The $25 cheeseburger that comes with 5 waffle fries was ordered medium, but was VERY well done and dried out. The $18 "doughnuts" were actually 8 donut holes that were about 3/4" in diameter (about 1/3 the size of a Dunkin donut hole) and came with two small ramekins that had a caramel sauce and a chocolate sauce. Salsa, guac and chips were $15 to $20 and the chips were stale. Every item was disappointing to say the least. Be aware that if you order anything from the lobby restaurant for room service, the menu prices are all about 20% higher than they are in the restaurant, plus they add a $6 delivery fee and an automatic 22% gratuity. We ordered a club sandwich and a Sprite for my father-in-law on check in day that ended up being $67 due to the extra menu price, delivery fee and automatic gratuity. What hotel books a block of rooms for a wedding party and then places each of the guests in a different building and they are spread out across the entire properly? What hotel has their handicap accessible rooms placed farthest away from elevators and not on the first floor? (Almost forgot to mention that the elevator in the Sedona building would malfunction if you pushed the door close button, causing the doors to partially shut and then reopen several times). Overall, the Arizona Grand Resort and Spa is a very poor value for the money in perms of the room quality, amenities, and food. They charge extra for things that IHG, Marriott, and other hotels offer for free, the Lobby Restaurant has poor / non-existent service and extremely overpriced food and drinks.
