Hotel at a Glance: Arlington Resort Hotel & Spa

Yoko Ono, Al Capone, and Franklin Roosevelt have all relaxed within the stately Arlington Resort Hotel & Spa, which began inviting guests to dip in its soothing waters in 1875. The resort has been revamped and remodeled many times since then, but it still offers the same luxurious amenities: warm natural spring waters, spa services, and gourmet cuisine. As a guest at Arlington Resort, you can play golf and tennis at the nearby Hot Springs Country Club.

  • Bubbling hot-spring water is pumped right into the hotel’s spa and thermal bathhouse, where you can soothe your muscles with a soak or refresh your skin with a seaweed body wrap.
  • Venetian Dining Room: This onsite restaurant has been around since the 1920s. A weekly seafood night features live piano music.
  • Take a dip in outdoor pools and hot tubs that stay open all year.

Hot Springs, Arkansas: Home to Historic Hot Springs National Park

The resort community of Hot Springs, located less than 60 miles southwest of Little Rock, offers thoroughbred racing at Oaklawn Jockey Club, has a thriving small-town arts scene, and was the boyhood hometown of President Bill Clinton. But the primary attraction remains the natural thermal waters that gave the town its name. They flow out of the ground at about 147 degrees at Hot Springs National Park, nicknamed “The American Spa.” The mineral pools put the town on the map in the late 19th century, and scores of celebrities sampled them in the 20th, including Babe Ruth, Harry Truman, Rose Kennedy, and Barbara Streisand. The Chicago Cubs, Boston Red Sox, and Brooklyn Dodgers have vacationed here during spring training, and Al Capone used to rent out an entire floor of the Arlington Hotel on Central Avenue.

While you’re here, be sure to take a stroll along Bathhouse Row, where visitors have been soaking in the hot springs for more than a century. You can take a traditional bath in an individual tub at the Buckstaff Baths, or tour the luxurious and historic Fordyce Bathhouse—a precursor to the modern spa dating back to 1915.

Insects, peeling paint and broken doors. The paint was peeling and the bathroom door wouldn’t close but the main issue was bugs. I laid down but was awakened by something crawling on my neck. I brushed it off. In the light from my phone I saw It was a small black bug, not that big of deal, but then I saw another on my arm. I said something to my wife about it. She turned on the light and there were several of these bugs on the bed! They were on the walls and the ceiling too. The hotel switched us to a different room but it too had bugs! While we were going to the new room we met another couple whose room also had bugs. Like us they were being switched to a new room. There was a staff member explaining to them that the bugs were called “Magnolia bugs” and they’re attracted to the magnolia trees on the property and they’re harmless. Harmless or not, I don’t care to sleep in an infestation and I sure don’t want to carry any of them home with me. It was almost midnight and we ended up leaving. We were unable to find another room. Everything was booked. We ended up driving back home to Texas. Our first visit to Hot Springs was not a good one. The hotel refunded one of the two nights we booked with them.

Can I give a half circle? The Arlington seemed so promising. It has the history, the real metal hotel keys, the lively band, amazing bar, and wonderful art deco style. Unfortunately, that's where the charm ends! We turned the key and were met with a muggy, humid hotel room that felt as old as it was. The stained green carpet was moist (yes...it's as gross as it sounds), the paint was peeling off the walls, and the sheets were (you guessed it) moist. It was rough, but we decided to chalk it all up to "charm," that is until, my husband and I tried to put our toddler to sleep. The music from the great band was too loud to drowned out (even with a sound machine) on the second floor, every flush of the next floor's neighbor was surround sounded into our room, someone was kind enough to leave their hair on our sheets, and then there was the weed. It wafted in through the vents and under the door. Someone or a group of someone's was smoking out and we were the lucky second handers. We asked to be moved to a new room before our toddler got her first contact high, there were none available. Finally, we decided to risk losing our money to leave. They were nice enough to not charge us for the two other days we had reserved, but did charge us for the night we left at 11:30. We promptly went to the Microtel down the street. It was much cleaner and much, much quieter! Save your money, just go to the Arlington for a drink!!

Historic hotel We didn’t stay here. But we will in the future. This is a historic hotel. Built 100 years ago and there are going to be issues….we went to look around and I finally asked if we could tour a room. Alan Peterson took us to 2 rooms. One is where Babe Ruth stayed and the other was a regular double. We also got to see the ballroom. Alan gave us a multitude of facts about the hotel. We have already made plans to stay there at the end of the year. Alan was knowledgeable on the history of the hotel, and also what it takes to renovate and restore this grand place. If you’re expecting all new everything, than this place isn’t for you. We want to thank all of the staff at the Arlington for being so gracious and especially Alan, for giving us a tour and hospitality! Kudos to you!
