Hampton, New Hampshire: Historical Town with Award-Winning Beaches
Hampton overlooks the blue-gray waters of the Atlantic Ocean from a seaside perch in southeastern New Hampshire. Every summer, visitors flock to Hampton Beach, the town’s main draw and one of only four shorelines in the country named a “superstar beach” by the Natural Resources Defense Council. This award goes to beaches with a long record of clean swimming water. Beginning on Memorial Day weekend, Hampton Beach hosts weekly fireworks displays and 80 evening concerts, and all are free to the public. Visitors can also grab bites to eat or beers at one of the many bars and cafés lining Ocean Boulevard, which runs along the coast.
The town dates back to the mid-17th century when it became the fourth English settlement in New Hampshire. To learn more about Hampton’s history, head a few miles inland to the Hampton Historical Society. The grounds contains a 19th-century schoolhouse, an 18th-century barn, and a small museum with photographs and documents from the town’s early days.
