Hotel at a Glance: Avalon Hotel Palm Springs

Although it's nestled in the heart of downtown, the 4-star Avalon Hotel Palm Springs feels like it's completely tucked away from civilization. It sits on four acres of manicured gardens, with citrus trees, blossoming flowers, and rich greenery creating a natural curtain that hides it away from the outside world. During your stay, you can take advantage of this natural calm by strolling through the gardens or whiling away the days poolside.

  • Pamper yourself with a custom massage, body scrub, or relaxing pedicure from the full-service spa (additional fees apply).
  • Have a poolside meal at Chi-Chi, the on-site restaurant and bar.
  • Commune with nature during a long hike through Mount San Jacinto State Park, which neighbors the resort.
  • Splurge a little: The neighboring town of Palm Desert is known for its world-class shopping on El Paeso Drive, which is sometimes nicknamed the "Rodeo Drive of the desert"; it's just 13 miles away.

Palm Springs, California: SoCal Resort Town with Midcentury Charm

Palm Springs is an oasis of outdoor recreation and old Hollywood glamour located about 100 miles from Los Angeles. Once the stomping grounds of Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, and the Rat Pack, the town still attracts A-list vacationers today. A stroll through the Movie Colony—which had its heyday between the 1930s and 1960s—will take you past the former homes of Dean Martin, Bob Hope, and Marilyn Monroe.

Palm Springs is also the birthplace of desert modernism, a Bauhaus-influenced architecture movement. You can explore the area's famed midcentury-modern landmarks on a self-guided tour; grab a map at the Palm Springs Official Visitors Center, itself housed in an iconic building—a retro-futuristic Tramway Gas Station designed by Albert Frey. Furniture and clothing boutiques along Palm Canyon Drive embrace Palm Springs' trademark aesthetic—what you might call Mad Men West. Nearby, the small but impressively curated Palm Springs Art Museum features works by Pablo Picasso and Robert Rauschenberg along with significant contemporary and Native American collections.

The sun shines more than 300 days a year in Palm Springs, which means you can play a round of golf or hike in the nearby Agua Caliente Indian Canyons no matter the season. It’s worth taking a ride on the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, whose cars rotate 360 degrees as they carry passengers to Mount San Jacinto’s Mountain Station, located 8,516 feet above sea level. About 40 miles northeast is the nearly 800,000-acre Joshua Tree National Park, which spans parts of the Colorado and Mojave Deserts. Hit one of the 12 nature trails for a chance to see desert bighorn sheep, snakes, and black-tailed jackrabbits.

Lovely weekend getaway with my pup and friends. Nice property and very dog friendly. Also was able to take aqua yoga which was pretty nice since it was a hot weekend in July. Oh and waffle fries are so addictive at the pool restaurant.

Look up the Definition of Palm Springs and you'll find, "Avalon Hotel and Bungalows" My dog thinks we have a second home in Palm Springs. She’s not the only one. However, better than the responsibilities associated with ownership (I owned homes in the desert area for 32 years), when I “come home” to the Avalon Hotel and Bungalows, I have all the feeling of my own home, but without any of the negative responsibilities. Moreso, unlike a home, I have an entire staff of warm and friendly folks who look after me. Each day, my dog and I wake up and go for a walk around town, but not before I call for room service. By the time I return, the floors are scrubbed, the bed is made with clean sheets, the towels are replaced with clean ones, the kitchen sink and area are cleaned, and the outside front and back patios are spotless. I order room service for breakfast on the porch while I listen to the tinkling of the fountains, watch the palms sway and eye the delicious grapefruits growing in the courtyard. I make my way to one of the three fab pools and order lunch poolside while I swim some laps before it arrives. The acai bowls are sensational. I order room service for dinner by the roaring fireplace (winter of course) and since I stay for over a month each year, when I run out of food options on the menu, the obliging staff suggest new items for me. The cottages are uniquely palm springs, painted uplifting white with “Hollywood” dramatic black accents. The cottages are stand alone and so have no neighbors and the property is quiet and beyond peaceful. Each year when it’s time to leave, I must be dragged out while screaming and protesting; but I know that in 11 months I’ll be back. And when I can’t wait the 11 months, I pop into the desert and stay in the bungalow for a quick fix. But a place is a place but for the folks who make it special. From the gardeners and housekeepers to the front staff, back-of-office staff and spa staff, you just can’t find a better group of people. They always make me feel welcome, wanted and part of the Avalon Family. There are dozens and dozens of choices in the desert, but seriously, why would I go anywhere else. Oh, and by the way, I don’t own the place! Run don’t walk, you won’t regret it! Keep your eyes open for these amazing staff members who always make my stays so wonderful: Front Desk: Candace, Juan, Cody, Grace and Christina; Dining and Room service: Michelle, Norby, Emily, Brian, Yasmin, Eloy, Guillermo; Housekeeping: Elsa and Lorena; Valets: Demar, Raja and Alex.

Midweek Midsummer Trip I don’t usually write reviews but had such a great time here! We went here on a whim midweek midsummer as a getaway from the city and the morning greyness. Because it was off peak the whole of Palm Springs was so peaceful and calm though there was still a bit of a buzz at Melvyn’s restaurant when we ate dinner there. The pool was blissful and quiet, the food excellent and the team particularly attentive and friendly. Thanks Avalon P.S.! We’ll be back!
