New Orleans’s Garden District: Historic Neighborhood with Antebellum Mansions and Green Spaces

Antebellum New Orleans was a hub of international commerce thanks to its strategic position along the Mississippi River. This made it one of the country's richest cities, and the American merchants that flocked there built elegant neoclassical mansions with two-tiered porches supported by tall white columns. Today, you can still see these monuments to wealth along the oak-lined St. Charles Avenue. Take a self-guided tour aboard the vintage St. Charles streetcar, which has been running for more than 150 years. It cruises through the Garden District and downtown New Orleans before reaching the French Quarter.

A few blocks south of St. Charles Avenue lies Magazine Street, the neighborhood’s main shopping and dining zone. Named for a string of 18th-century warehouses (magasins in French), the 6-mile stretch offers some of the city's best antiquing amid a mishmash of Greek Revival and Victorian buildings. You also might want to pay a visit to one of the many green spaces and public squares for which the Garden District was named. Coliseum Square, a particularly lush spot, is lined with concrete walking trails leading to a central fountain.

Horrible Customer Service After Facility Closed By City for Utility Failure This is a customer service review: My family and I had a room here reserved, arriving June 5, 2024. I received two emails on 5/31/24, one right after another. One stating that there had been an issue and the City had shut the place down until it could be resolved, then an immediate cancellation notice from Wyndham. There was no phone call. Nobody from customer service reached out to try and place us in another Wyndham facility. We were shuttled from phone number to phone number trying to get answers and help, and NOBODY was answering at the actual hotel, probably because they'd been shut down. This was five days before we were supposed to leave. We ended up canceling our entire vacation. While we were not charged for the rooms at this facility, the customer service and communication was absolutely abysmal. And get this... the incident that had caused the city to ultimately shut them down happened in early May! Not ONE effort at communication about an ongoing, evolving, SERIOUS issue. I'm very disappointed with the company. As someone else has said in their review... ruined out entire vacation.

They ruined our vacation. Cancelled due to building problems. They are closed. Due to water, electrical blah blah blah problems. They were supposed to be open by the date of our reservation which was May 24th. They weren’t. This caused extreme inconvenience and disappointment. My wife had never been to NOLA so we were both excited about the trip. No trip. They ruined it. One strike, you’re out.
