Atlantic City, New Jersey: Casinos and Carnival Rides Lining Historical Beachside Boardwalk

No trip to Atlantic City is complete without a stroll along its signature boardwalk, which stretches for 6 miles along New Jersey's eastern coast. Originally built in 1870 to keep sand out of hotel lobbies, the boardwalk grew in popularity as a place where you could drink and gamble during Prohibition without much trouble from the police, as depicted in HBO's Boardwalk Empire. The boardwalk is still popular for its casinos, but it's family-friendly, too; visitors are just as inclined to sit at the beach or stop at one of the many carnival rides.

On the boardwalk, it's worth it to check out the Absecon Lighthouse, which is more than 150 years old. It's possible to climb its 228 steps to the top, which features sweeping views of the city skyline and the sea.

Don't go here if you’re sad…._ So my mom and I decided to go to Bally’s. We haven’t been there in over 14 years. The last time we went there was to pick up my stepdad’s belongings. He passed away in the casino. I won’t even get into it but the day we went to pick up his stuff the workers had cleaned his room already and I’m guessing stole his money bc the night before he had been up by 1200. The beds were made in his room almost like he’d never been there. So I have hated Bally’s for quite some time. But my mom wanted to go maybe for some type of closure. So we went. The parking garage is dingy. The hallway to the elevator is dingy. The casino itself is sad and dull. Music isn’t great. Quiet except for the slot machines. No excitement. I didn’t feel positive vibes the whole time I was there. It was boring. And the server serving drinks on the floor refused us cocktails because “it wasn’t her section”. She said she would have the server in that section come over. She never came. As a matter of fact, we saw her working the same section as the other server so make that make sense. The bathrooms are far and there are only a couple. The one I went in was dirty and unkempt. We didn’t win even once in the roulette machines. Or the slots. Went to have happy hour at Park Prime. We got there at 5:40 and the server was like “Happy hour is about to be over.” Well no not really when ur ends at 6! The food was okay. The wagyu sliders had no sauce so they were dry and the rolls they were in weren’t soft. The scallops in bacon are chewy over cooked scallops over a piece of bacon w sauce. The sauce was good. The oysters were okay. And the ceviche came in a scoop and it was plentiful in peppers and onions but not so much in seafood. The drinks however were good. First and last time there. I had to go to Phil’s Carousel bar to get the drinks. I asked the guy how much the drinks were. He looked at me, ignored me and continued a convo w another patron. $18 for a coors light and a high noon. Smh. We went to get a players card so I could try to get free parking which I was able to get. Only light in the dark experience. This is a sad hotel but could be livened up if there was good music, maybe another bar, and some happy workers.

Family fun Got 1 room at Ballys with 2 double beds. Rooms were renovated and clean. The new showers they put in are small, awkward, and the drain kept clogging and overflowing. The hallways were very small, and the doors were not ada compliant. We got some lunch at sac of suds. Food was fresh and good. Overpriced. Same for the 6th floor restaurant, thar serves breakfast and lunch. Coffee and food are good. Service good. There is no valet during the week. Self park free for guests. Guests pay to use gym and adults only pool. There is a beach bar and beach and boardwalk. The slots were not as tight as they are at trop. Fun trip.

Bally’s is BARELY surviving This place is on its way to being a complete dump. Broken ceramic in the bathroom, chipping wood on the furniture and some discreet stains on the mattress cover. Room smelled like mildew, very humid, so we had to keep AC very cold. The wallpaper is peeling in the hallways and the carpet is wavier than an 80’s perm. After the city fees, taxes, resort fee and parking it was almost $300 a night. Save your money and stay at Hard Rock Cafe or Tropicana.
