Hotel at a Glance: Banff Rocky Mountain Resort

Nestled in the Canadian Rockies of Banff National Park, Banff Rocky Mountain Resort makes for a rustic resting place after days spent skiing, hiking, snowboarding, and climbing. While the area’s numerous alpine runs attract winter sports enthusiasts, the resort also accommodates newcomers, offering private instruction through its own Caribou Snow School. And after a day spent on the slopes, guests can warm up in their rooms by the heat of wood or gas fireplaces.

  • Eat well: Each stay includes $15 to the onsite Alpha Bistro.
  • Relax after a day in the snow by soaking in the indoor hot tub.
  • Get into town on the resort’s free shuttle to downtown Banff, with hourly departures from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Banff, Alberta: Four Seasons of Outdoor Fun in the Canadian Rockies

The tiny mountain town of Banff is ringed by rugged peaks and dense pine forests in the heart of the Canadian Rockies, about 90 minutes west of Calgary. The town is home to year-round outdoor activities at Banff National Park. The park encompasses 2,564 square miles of snow-capped mountains, coniferous forests, and glacial lakes that are a shocking shade of blue; US News & World Report called Banff one of the best national parks in the world.

In the winter, skiing is the area’s big draw, with three ski resorts totaling nearly 300 runs. Once the snow melts, you can still enjoy the brisk mountain air on miles of hiking and mountain-biking trails such as Stoney Squaw Summit, a route that wends through dense forests to a stunning mountain vista. Banff Upper Hot Springs, open all year long, is another popular attraction. The mineral-rich waters stay at a constant 98 to 104 degrees Fahrenheit.

It was cozy and the fireplace was great, but we could hear every footstep in the suite above us.

There was only the two of us, so it was all the space we required. The bed was a bit uncomfortable harder than we like.
