Traverse City, Michigan: Charming Cherry Capital of the World

One of USA Today’s 10 Great Places for Local Wines, Traverse City draws visitors year-round with its fine Rieslings made from grapes grown on the fertile Old Mission Peninsula. The proclaimed “Cherry Capital of the World,” tucked between the pinky and ring finger on the hand-shaped Lower Peninsula of Michigan, is bordered by scenic Grand Traverse Bay to the north and the sprawling Traverse City State Forest Area to the east.

The town’s downtown and waterfront thrive with gourmet restaurants and landmarks such as the State Theatre, a restored art-house cinema built in 1949; drop by for the $0.25 Saturday morning matinee. A drive north up the Old Mission Peninsula eventually ends at the whitewashed Mission Point Lighthouse, a landmark constructed in 1870.

Won’t be back Very dated hotel, our first room smelt like mold/mildew so we requested to change rooms. Next room on a different floor and opposite side of the hotel smelt the same. Had allergies the entire 2-night stay. We wish we had booked refundable so we could leave. Go down the street or more into town to get value for your money. We will be back to traverse city, but not at this hotel!!!! View is pretty, but you can walk to the beach for free, no need to stay here and pay for to be on the beach. Staff was uninterested in the guests, very little contact and engagement from them.

Nice hotel - older but very clean. Good location. Extremely helpful and friendly staff. Breakfast was OK. Wish bed mattress and beach chairs were more comfortable. Shuttle service to downtown was a plus.
