South Lake Tahoe, California: Year-Round Haven for Outdoor Adventures and Late-Night Revelry

Lake Tahoe has no real off-season; people find ways to make use of its pristine water, beaches, and mountains all year long. In the summer, the lake's clear, freshwater surface—which straddles the California-Nevada border—is dotted with swimmers, boaters, and jet skiers. Several ski resorts typically stay open from November to April, and Emerald Bay State Park is accessible year-round. A moderately easy hike to the base of Lower Eagle Falls reveals breathtaking views of the waterfalls crashing down from above.

Spectators gather at night for South Lake Tahoe's events, which range from wine and food festivals to rock concerts and fireworks displays. A few miles northwest of South Lake Tahoe sits Stateline, Nevada, where a handful of casinos host high-stakes games of blackjack and solitaire.

Great Lake view place Simple, clean, pet friendly with a private beach + restaurant with the lake view & a bar at the beach area. Great place. It’s our second stay here. We definitely will return great location near everything. Price is fair (250/night + pet fee).

Website photos are an advertising deception! When the best of the best timeshare resort vacation companies arranged our recent stay at Beach Retreat and Lodge (BR&L) South Lake Tahoe as part of their Timeshare Resort Sales. My past positive experiences over 21 years as a club member have been top-notch and beyond those of their competitors. Guest service, quality, and the corporate, hotel franchise owner, general managers, and employee staff attitude are what I anticipated and expected upon arrival. Initially, this level of thinking about the accommodations at BR&L after paying the $196.20 Resort Fee and the security deposit of $75.00 toward any Purchases & Damages to room A102, I was steadfast in my thinking about the room’s quality without a second thought. However, that shattered like a soap bubble burst from a child’s toy bubble wand after entering the room. I discovered the amenities provided to guests, or should I say lack thereof, for even a low-cost room at one of their resort rooms, standard amenities. Missing was a microwave oven, which later turned out to be a vital necessity cause reasonably priced meals at local restaurants were impossible to find due to closure before 6:00 PM. For example, IHOP closed at 3:00 PM & Red Hut at 2:00 PM. There are several 24-hour Casinos in the downtown area with food courts and restaurants. Unfortunately, I am not able to patronize them because I am a disabled service-connected combat veteran with PTSD and physical disabilities associated with my being a 4-stroke survivor traveling with a service dog. The casino’s noise and crowded patron occupancy would aggravate my PTSD, triggering claustrophobia and a panic attack. While I am about to say it would appear as trivia, it is an essential amenity to have either a table, a desk, or even a counter to use for a work area to prepare & distribute packaged food. Not one of these items was present in the room. In fact, I went and tried to purchase a small folding table locally. I shopped at three local stores to find a small folding table and discovered that no such item existed for purchase. I had to confine my computer to use the room’s beverage stand, which was smaller than my Dell Laptop. With all this said and reported in this letter, it may seem like a minor inconvenience to some complacent guests. What I discovered at 10:00 PM the day of arrival, and the response from the Front Desk employee, warrants the timeshare company providing our accommodations to consider ending the contract with BR&L and seeking some resolution in the way of the return of any payments for rooms. In addition, schedule future room reservations for Guests of our host timeshare to be booked at their hotel a few blocks away. 10:00 PM Incident: I went to use the shower, which I discovered was not operable. The shower knob valve would not slide out. Several hard pulls resulted in the valve piping pushing the wall outward. Fearing that I would break the pipe assembly, I called the Front Desk for assistance. The employee informed me that the maintenance employee had just left for the day. When I asked if he could call him back, he said that he had no phone number for him. When I asked him to call the manager, I got the same answer. The answers I received made me very angry. So, I decided then to yank the knob one more time. If it broke the pipes, it was their problem, not mine. Whoever heard of a business without an emergency contact phone number? This is what was required for my wife and me to take a shower over the following two days left on our room booking. During that time, not once did management, maintenance, and housekeeping staff contact me about the broken shower or the black mold. I left it that way when we checked out of BR&L. It is my opinion that not only was I a victim, but also the host timeshare company of a sham produced by the owners of BR&L, portraying that this lodging was of equal quality and guest service commitment as required for guests. In addition, I consider the unscrupulous actions and attitude of the BR&L owner, management, and employees during our stay to be nothing less than a serious defamation of the host timeshare company’s brand and reputation. I firmly believe that the BR&L owner planned this scham knowing that the host timeshare company’s Hotel Booking employees were miles away in another location, preventing them from doing an inspection of BR&L. Thus, my wife and I, as well as the hosting timeshare resort company, became easy prey for the owner to make a fast buck. Evidence of this is in their website advertisement room photos versus what I photographed of the room on the day we checked in. I called the hosting timeshare company to report the room’s condition and lack of amenities. They searched for a room at another hotel, including one of their own hotels, a few blocks away from BR&L, but they did not find a room in another hotel. You can be the judge of whether the quality and amenities of this room are what you are seeking here. Michael T. Geddry Sr.
