South Lake Tahoe, California: Year-Round Haven for Outdoor Adventures and Late-Night Revelry

Lake Tahoe has no real off-season; people find ways to make use of its pristine water, beaches, and mountains all year long. In the summer, the lake's clear, freshwater surface—which straddles the California-Nevada border—is dotted with swimmers, boaters, and jet skiers. Several ski resorts typically stay open from November to April, and Emerald Bay State Park is accessible year-round. A moderately easy hike to the base of Lower Eagle Falls reveals breathtaking views of the waterfalls crashing down from above.

Spectators gather at night for South Lake Tahoe's events, which range from wine and food festivals to rock concerts and fireworks displays. A few miles northwest of South Lake Tahoe sits Stateline, Nevada, where a handful of casinos host high-stakes games of blackjack and solitaire.

An overpriced dump Do not book a room here! The rooms are old with no upgrades in years, smell musty and are comparable to a Motel 6. In order to use my computer, I had to use the ironing board as a table. We had paid $259 in advance when booking a room for 3 nights. When I checked in and gave them a credit card, presumably for incidentals, I was charged an additional $196. When I asked what that was for, I was told it was for the amenities. There are virtually no amenities. We stayed two nights and left, with no reimbursement for the third night. It is unfortunate that Tripadvisor does not allow you to give no stars or even better minus stars.

Joey is the man! Joey checked us in and he did a phenomenal job making us feel welcomed and even helping us look for attractions in the area. He was very professional and kind. The resort is great, but he made the experience incredible from the very beginning.

What a great time in Tahoe! We spent a week at the Beach Retreat and Lodge at Tahoe. We couldn't be happer with our time there. The best part of our stay: the views of Lake Tahoe from our room windows. We owe it to Sierrah and Nina at the front desk if we enjoyed a truly memorable week of breathtaking lake views. They were extremely helpful, gracious, and professional. In spite of our mistakenly booking through a third party, they were able to accommodate our request. Rooms are spotless, have nice balconies, and very comfortable beds. Coffee maker, tea and coffee are provided. Freshly ground coffee is available all day in the lobby. There is also a fridge, which comes in very handy, as a huge Safeway is across the street. We spent most of our days on the road or hiking in order to explore the amazing natural beauty of Lake Tahoe and the surrounding mountains, but it was a true pleasure to return every evening to our room with a view. A suggestion for improvement: more storage space for clothing would be welcome.
