Mendocino Coast, California: Small Towns Along Scenic Oceanfront and Redwood Forests

Located about three hours north of San Francisco, Northern California’s Mendocino Coast is a region filled with tiny towns, art colonies, and varied terrain. Within a few minutes of one another are sunlit valleys, fertile vineyards, rocky headlands blanketed by fog, and serene forests of old-growth redwoods. The Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens showcase the area’s geographical diversity through its native rhododendrons, prickly succulents, and colorful blooms stretching to the ocean.

Partially because of its scenic land and sea scapes, the coast is popular with painters, who gather in artists’ collectives such as the Mendocino Art Center. To see the land that inspires local artwork, head to Russian Gulch, Mendocino Headlands, or any of the region’s coastal state parks. At Mendocino Headlands State Park, waves crash into carving arches, grottos, and stony bluffs, while MacKerricher State Park north of Fort Bragg contains dramatic sand dunes.

Although normally quiet, the region comes alive during a series of whale festivals every March and April, when California gray whales pass by the coast as they migrate from Mexico to Alaska. You’ll find one of the best vantage points for whale watching at Point Cabrillo Light Station, a lonely lighthouse first lit in 1909.

Was OK, but would choose somewhere else next time Hotel really needs updating. Toilets flushed slow. Water pressure low. No breakfast and no restaurant on site. Not even a seating area in the lobby. We stayed 3 nights which apparently meant that we got no maid service during that time, although we paid full price (no discount for no maid service). Staff at front desk was very nice, but we likely would not stay here again

Location is outstanding I loved this hotel. The location was perfect. From our second story balcony, I could see the ocean. without even opening the sliding doors. There were several trails overlooking the beach that you could take right from there, and glass beach was only a ten minute walk away. So much to do, and you didn't need to move your car. To grab a bite to eat, you did have to get into the car. I will say that the place was very clean, but the bathroom fixtures were dated. The sink is outside the bathroom, and I really prefer not to have the set up this way. The bed was super comfortable and I loved the white linens. The parking lot was a bit difficult to maneuver with a larger car, but there are plenty of slots available with a couple of places to plug in an electric car or a Tesla. Housekeeping does not clean your room unless you request it, and you can always get fresh towels. I would not hesitate to stay here again or recommend it to a friend.

Great dog-friendly stay with one major glitch I love visiting Fort Bragg along the central California coast, especially because the Beachcomber Inn is incredibly dog friendly. They even have their own dog park, right there near the beach, with connections to two of the individual dog-friendly rooms. The only downside to our visit this time was the total lack of wifi in our room. I complained on the first day, and was told maintenance would fix it. When it was still not working the next day I was told maintenance could not fix it and that the internet provider was contacted. But the issue was never resolved, which was a bummer because I had taken photos for a charity event several days previous and without cell service or wifi could not share them with the organizers.
