The Northern Beaches of North Carolina’s Outer Banks: Idyllic Towns, Sand Dunes, and Wright Brothers History

Dubbed the “East Coast’s recreational playground” by Frommer’s, the Outer Banks is a string of narrow barrier islands that hugs the northern coast of North Carolina. Vacationers have flocked to the islands’ postcard-worthy beaches and idyllic villages since the 18th century. The most northerly island in the Outer Banks, Bodie Island, is home to five such towns, known collectively as the Northern Beaches: Duck, Southern Shores, Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, and Nags Head.

Head to Kill Devil Hills to see the Wright Brothers National Memorial Park, where a large granite boulder commemorates the spot where the world’s first powered flight took off, in 1903. The memorial also includes replicas of the brothers’ early gliders. Just outside the town of Nags Head lie some of the East Coast’s tallest natural sand dunes at Jockey’s Ridge State Park. Strong winds off the ocean constantly reshape the dunes and make the area a popular spot for hang-gliding and flying kites. Make the drive south to Cape Hatteras National Seashore, nicknamed the “Graveyard of the Atlantic” for the many ships that have crashed into its dangerous sandbars during storms. Here, you can catch a glimpse of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, whose iconic exterior is a swirl of black and white stripes.

The only thing bad was going up and down the outside stairs. For someone over 65 this is arduous. Otherwise, we love the resort

Purchased a 3rd night as I was unaware of the late checkout option however, 2 nights was the max for our littlest kiddos! We had the BEST time and saved a ton of money by being able to cook in our room! Definitely will be going back!

The rooms are HUGE! Tons of room for family activities and just enough space to spread out for some alone time! Water park was awesome! Not very many people, basically had the park to ourselves! Note: there is not daily housekeeping, must take your trash to the dumpsters. Also, late checkout is an option for an additional fee and you do NOT have to purchase an additional night as I misunderstood.

The boys loved having their own space and beds upstairs in the loft

Price was great, huge awesome room, fun amenities but my room was not clean...there was a mysterious brown liquid on the tv stand and a old used washcloth in the shower.

My family and I really enjoyed our stay. It was like staying in an apartment...our room was clean spacious, has all the things we would need if we wanted to cook!!! The only thing I would have to complain about was the small slide not having someone to monitor multiple kids coming down at once...but we will definitely be going back in the spring/summer so we can do some of the other activities

The experience was amazing, hardly no one around. We basically had the place to ourselves. The pool was nice and clean. The only thing we would’ve liked to be informed that the hot tub was closed. The room was nice and roomy and secluded.

Great unit. Full modern kitchen with everything you would need to cook. Nice wrap around porch. Resort was empty so no concerns with neighbor noise or social distancing due to Covid.
