The Northern Beaches of North Carolina's Outer Banks: Idyllic Towns, Sand Dunes, and Wright Brothers History

Dubbed the “East Coast’s recreational playground” by Frommer’s, the Outer Banks is a string of narrow barrier islands that hugs the northern coast of North Carolina. Vacationers have flocked to the islands’ postcard-worthy beaches and idyllic villages since the 18th century. The most northerly island in the Outer Banks, Bodie Island, is home to five such towns, known collectively as the Northern Beaches: Duck, Southern Shores, Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, and Nags Head.

Head to Kill Devil Hills to see the Wright Brothers National Memorial Park, where a large granite boulder commemorates the spot where the world’s first powered flight took off, in 1903. The memorial also includes replicas of the brothers' early gliders. Just outside the town of Nags Head lie some of the East Coast’s tallest natural sand dunes at Jockey’s Ridge State Park. Strong winds off the ocean constantly reshape the dunes and make the area a popular spot for hang-gliding and flying kites. Make the drive south to Cape Hatteras National Seashore, nicknamed the “Graveyard of the Atlantic” for the many ships that have crashed into its dangerous sandbars during storms. Here, you can catch a glimpse of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, whose iconic exterior is a swirl of black and white stripes.

4.5 stars 100% recommend!! This was an incredible weekend getaway! The staff were kind, the apartment was beautiful, and clean! Walmart is conveniently behind the resort if you prefer to grocery shop. There’s also a lot of great breakfast spots (Sandtrap Tavern 10/10)! Bring a fire stick for movies bc they only have cable. call ahead before going someone as a lot of businesses are seasonal.

Great deal and very impressive. Has its own indoor water park like Great Wolf Lodge. Safe and gated community. It’s like you are in your own house like a duplex. Each culdesac has four houses with four units each. Two on top and two at the bottom. Has plenty of parking space. Who needs airbnb if you can have it for much cheaper. Has a private parking for access at the beach. It’s close to Walmart if that matters as it has its own kitchen. Amenities include an arcade, pool table basketball court indoor and outdoor swimming pool and many more.

Disappointed in Hilton Disappointed!!!! Four nights booked with a 2BD/2bath loft #1. One week out from our arrival we were informed that the hotel indoor pool and waterpark was about to go under renovations and would not be available when we arrive __ #2. Our building is in the woods as expected but all the doorframes and the screened in porch is COVERED in spiderwebs and egg sacks and piles of old dried up dirt and leaves. #3. We killed 2 palmetto bugs inside our rooms. AKA giant Florida woods cockroach. Gross. #4. Some kid pooped in the one remaining pool in the afternoon on our second day. It was such a disaster that they had to shut down not just the pool, but the entire pool deck until 2:30pm the next day. #5 the next day after a very long hot day at the beach we couldn’t wait to get back and get into the cool and I was looking forward to a cocktail and snacks from the bar. Imagine our surprise when we find out that since the pool didn’t open until 2:30 PM, even though the pool is open until 10 PM there will be no bar service today at all. Closed until completely. So no snacks. No food. No drinks. No alcohol alcoholic beverages. And the sign on the gates says no coolers allowed. So we have infested doorways, bugs in the room, no use of the indoor pool, a day without the use of any pool, and now we’re here with no drinks or snacks. Not the Hilton holiday I was expecting by far. So yes Pretty disappointed. A

Beautiful location The unit was clean and the staff was amazing as we had a couple questions that were addressed immediately. The only complaint is the kitchen isn't stocked well for someone like us who cook then go to the beach or tour around.

Nice Resort We had a great time at Beechwood Resort. We stayed in a large spacious four bedroom unit. Very clean, but furniture needs to be updated, sagging sofa and bar stools. The waterpark was very nice, but the hot tub malfunction or was shut down during our entre stay. Nonetheless, grandkids had a great time in the pool and water slid.
