Abbeville, South Carolina: Lovely Small Town and Former Confederate Stronghold

Abbeville’s slogan: “Pretty. Near. Perfect.” That seems to sum things up nicely—this community 3 hours from Atlanta, settled for more than 250 years, has a pleasant, venerable feel to it. Historic brick buildings and wide green lawns line its streets. It’s set up near several state forests and large lakes, including the Russell and Thurmond Lakes and the Sumter National Forest. During the Civil War, Abbeville was known as “the birthplace and the deathbed of the Confederacy.” It’s where Jefferson Davis made most of his major decisions during his term as President of the Confederacy.
