Inn at a Glance: Benbow Historic Inn

After the completion of the Redwood Highway in 1926, nine siblings constructed a hotel to accommodate the growing number of tourists traveling the country road. Soon, the resort’s private riverside setting began to attract luminaries such as Clark Gable and Eleanor Roosevelt. The property, which was recently completed in 2018 with an 8.5 million dollar renovation, was chosen “Best Small Historic Hotel” for 2018 by Historic Hotels of America and also received the Wine Spectator Award in 2018. The 4-star Benbow Historic Inn—named for the family who built it—has preserved its original splendor and expanded with a 2018 addition that included an elevator in the main building.

  • In-room amenities: Complimentary treats, such as sherry and scones (note: at 3 p.m. each day, the Inn serves complimentary tea and freshly baked scones)
  • Fine dining: Organic herbs and vegetables grown in the garden are used in dishes such as quail with tomato-bacon jam.
  • More than 220 wines from Sonoma, Napa, and Mendocino Counties
  • Preserving the past: member of Historic Hotels of America and on the National Register of Historic Places
  • Tudor Revival style: The inn was designed by architect Albert Farr, who created Jack London’s Wolf House outside Sonoma.

Garberville, California: Quaint Pastoral Town in the Redwood Belt

More than 50,000 acres of redwood groves stand along a 32-mile stretch of highway known as the Avenue of the Giants. In the surrounding Humboldt Redwoods State Park, visitors hike through miles of trails flanked by the tallest trees in the world. Trunks measuring 10 feet in diameter also ascend from Richardson Grove State Park, a living museum with ancient redwoods and waterways that flow with salmon and steelhead.

Historic Hotel Travelled in October 2023. Stayed there while visiting a friend that lives nearby and to be near the Redwood State Park. The Benbow is a beautiful Historic Hotel. The hotel and grounds are very well kept. Enjoyed a nice breakfast on the balcony the next morning.

Lovely place This historic inn is lovely and well maintained. Our room was spacious and well furnished, including two easy chairs and two luggage racks. We enjoyed our shady balcony looking over the garden and river. The food in the restaurant is superb. The staff we interacted with throughout the inn and grounds were cheerful and helpful. There are seating areas throughout the buildings and grounds. I would give 5 stars except: 1) the scent in the shampoo and conditioner is a horrendous chemical odor. Fortunately, I had travel size bottles from another accommodation so I could rewash my hair. We travel a lot, and I've never encountered anything like this. 2) the photos and ad suggest the pool adjoins the Inn. This is misleading; it's a good walk or drive away.

Pleasant and grounded experience The hotel is beautiful if you like historic places and has lovely grounds and places to sit and relax (inside and outside). The basic room is very small. This was our second time at the Benbow and we spent a little more and the room was a nice size. Parking is free and easy. There are some nice walks you can do in the area and the restaurant onsite is good with friendly service. There is not much else in Garberville apart from a cute little downtown. The hotel is a great starting point to see the Avenue of the Giants and for a relaxing and elegant stop. I don't think I would stay more than one night. Likely to be back if my travels take me that direction.
