SeaTac, Washington: Seattle Suburb with International Airport
SeaTac, an outlying suburb of Seattle, is almost exactly halfway between Seattle and Tacoma; the city's name is a portmanteau of the two metropolises. The Seattle-Tacoma International Airport is here, as is the 10.5-acre Highline SeaTac Botanical Garden.
To the south lies Tacoma, which boasts the state's largest port, a rail terminus, and a free downtown streetcar. After the early 1990s, the city reinvented itself as a cultural and intellectual hub, adding a University of Washington branch campus, a thriving museum district, and a rejuvenated waterfront to its formerly industrial landscape. Visitors can enjoy sweeping ocean views at Point Defiance Park, a 700-acre peninsula jutting out into Puget Sound. Though beautiful flower gardens, hiking trails, and paved bike paths draw crowds year round, the park's most popular attraction remains the Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium.
Seattle is just 15 miles to the north. One of the city's most renowned attractions, the Pike Place Market, bustles with both locals and out-of-towners browsing vendors selling fresh fruit, vegetables, fish, flowers, and meat. Before the spread of Starbucks to every corner, Seattleites grabbed cups of java at the company's original coffeehouse, which first opened here in 1971. It's also worth it to visit Seattle's iconic Space Needle. Journey to the top for fantastic views of the city skyline and Mount Rainier in the distance.
