1000 Islands, Ontario: Rhineland-Style Castles and Victorian Villages
The name shortchanges it slightly: there are actually closer to 2,000 islands and islets in the 1000 Islands, some of them no more than a few square feet in area. But who's counting? Either way, the area—a sort of archipelago scattered throughout the St. Lawrence River between Ontario and New York—is a sight to behold. Boat tours weave through the islands and stop off at Boldt Castle, which presides over its own island in New York's Alexandria Bay. The structure's distinctive turrets and drawbridge were inspired by castles along the Rhine in Germany.
The 1000 Islands are also home to several villages dating back to the early 19th-century. In the homey town of Gananoque, Ontario, centuries-old buildings house boutiques, bakeries, and restaurants that serve traditional German and English fare. Stroll through the historical 1000 Islands Village to see storybook Victorian homes and cottages and an old-style soda fountain.
